Approximately one-third of our life is spent sleeping. How crazy is that? So we’re basically asleep for one in three weeks of our life – which surely means I’m due for a nap at my desk right about now?

The length and quality of sleep directly affects your daily performance, mood, and entire waking life. Tell me something I don’t know – if I so much as think I’m about to be woken from a glorious dream-date with McDreamy, I’m spewing for the rest of the day.

Diaries from the pre-electric-light era show adults slept 9 to 10 hours a night. Their sleep cycles changed with the seasons and the timing of sunrises and sunsets. Oh to lead such a simple life.

To fall asleep, it’s important for the body to cool off first. Body temperature and the brain’s sleep-wake cycle are closely linked which is why you’re such a fidgety bum on a hot summer’s night.

If you take less than five minutes to fall asleep at night, you may be sleep-deprived. Strange but true. The ideal is between 10 and 15 minutes.

A new baby typically means 400 – 750 hours less sleep for parents in the first year. Holy cow – I don’t think I have that many hours sleep to lose!
