Congratulations Vanessa on making a positive decision for your health. I know how hard it is to lose weight. It has taken me a good couple of years just to find the right diet and finally I lost weight. Some people seem to lose weight best by eating lots of protein while others (like myself) lose weight by eating lots of fruit and veges. I am reading a great book at the moment called Eat Right for Your Type by Dr Peter J D’Adamo. Its about eating the right foods for our blood type. Sounds a bit crazy I know but after the diets my husband and I have tried over the last couple of years it makes a lot of sense and it is working. My husband also has to lose about 40kgs and this is the first diet he has stuck to in ages and it isnt expensive, you dont have to exercise (he is hopeless at sticking to that one) and it is actually working. I really wish you the best of luck with your weight loss and I know that you can do it. Have confidence in yourself. Theres a really great thread on BH under the health and wellbeing section called lift esteem and I check into it regularily. You should check it out. All of the ladies are so supportive and it helps to keep me motivated. Im sure it can do the same for you. Good luck Vanessa, youre off to a great start for 2011.

Another tip – a basic one but helpful. Everyday know exactly what you are going to eat for all meals and snacks that way you aren’t tempted to make non sensible chocies. ie if you get hungry and its 10.00am you know its yoghurt time, you don’t go mmm what do i feel like…and choose bikkies instead. When i was strictly following my diet as i had all my meals set out for the day I was never tempted apart from the odd occassion where I’d have a ‘i need chocolate meltdown’ (i first had to start on my diet when masterchef was entering its final weeks and watching all the desserts theyw ere cooking drove me crazy!). I was working at the time so would pack all my lunch and snacks for the day. I then knew I’d get home and have a milo at 5.30 and dinner was already defrosting. These days, now that i am at home, I am finding my food choices are not nearly as good. I dont plan on what I’m having for lunch until lunch time and so usually go for what i feel like…which is rarely a sensible choice. Even if you are going out, know what you are getting ie if you are going to the shops know that you are getting a salad from sumo salad or sushi or a sandwich and go straight to the shop – if you enter the food court hungry and not knowing what you want, some how, magically I think, you’ll end up with a big mac meal in front of you before you have even had a chance to think about it!! Thats what happens to me anyway!!

Haha, Id really love to know the answer to your question. But honestly, you really cant skip working out, or at least you have to do SOME excercise. It really helps with the bloody pumping through in order to keep you healthy while loosing weight. My friend loss so much weight that she looks anorexic now. And apparently I heard that she was on the “grapefruit diet” where you drank grapefruit juice with every meal you had and ate very healthy food such as lots of fruits and vegetables. She also skipped many meals and did a lot of gym. I must say I love the results on her. Hope that helped. 🙂

I meant any advice besides telling me to workout because working out to lose weight is obvious. I wanted tips to help other than working out tips.

I’ve lost about 7 kgs to where i want to be. And honestly just trying to make a conscious decision on your food as well helps a lot. i eat 3 meals a day with snacks in between, mostly on nuts (a handful about 15), plenty of fruits, plenty of water to drink and i try to take note what i eat everyday with my moods in mind too. because apparently mood does affect ur food choices too. I tend to try to keep my kJ to about 7000KJ which is about 1750 Calories, so try to keep ur whole day meals and snacks less than 2000calories. I use clothes as my weight judge. I used to be a size 8-10 it is average, but now i am a size 6 and weighing about 50, considering i was a tad chubbier about 57ish-58 kgs.

Incidental exercises are great too, dont have to be a prompt, planned exercise. But something that makes u sweat. home works like cleaning also help. All the best for ur goal.

Just a random tip- if you want to control your eating, eating off blue plates/bowls can make you want to eat less. Dunno if this helps, but thought you might like to know.

Congratulations on making a start ! my new years resolution this year is to shed some unwanted kilos too :$, i hear drinking lemon water is a great way to cleanse your insides and lose weight, but make sure you arent depriving yourself of any vitamins though. have you consulted your gp? (s)he might have some tips for you to lose weight safely, and so you can maintain it, because there are so many people who diet and once they stop dieting, and start eating normally, theyre metabolisms have slowed dramatically so you pile on the weight easily.

okay sorry for being so grim! i wish you all the best with your weight loss

Wow thanks so much Beautystar, your amazing .. im gonna have to copy, paste and print all this out.
Gonna book mark the calorie king too..

Thanks for all your info and support guys.

Ive been told to stop drinking all caffeinated drinks by my cardiologist, havent had anything with caffein for 2 months. I have 1 hot Milo a day, mostly because i can go WAYYYYY over board with Milo because its so yummy.

I know milo is yummy, but try to find a similar drink lower in calories! My sister gained so much weight over the summer by drinking cold milo and re-putting spoons into the cup as she ate it everyday. But i guess one cup a day is ok, just don’t go over board as it is very yummy!

Drink water to flush out the stuff in your body, around 6-8 cups each day. Add some lemon with it.

Cut down to 3 meals only. That’s what you need. No snacks inbetween, just water or a healthy fruit or veggie.

Don’t eat too much carbs, the average dinner plate has mostly carbs and that’s not how it’s supposed to be. Have more veggies on your plate and less carbs.

Ummm…try going to the gym 1-2 times a week. They have alot of equipments you can try. First time i went to the gym to tone up, i was really excited, the gym equipments looked like playthings and i was on them forever. Just remember to bring water with you and don’t get dehydrated.

Go window shopping alot! I’m not saying ‘go spend your money’, but more like go walking. Bring a pedometer with you to track down your steps, i forgot the steps you should aim for each day, but walking is healthy. Also, Who doesn’t enjoy shopping, it’s funner then just walking around town, which might bore you into feeling discouraged.

    Stay positive.
Best not to weigh yourself more than 1 one a week or else it’s easy to feel discouraged easily and not notice the change. When you check once a week, you can see the big difference you made, in a week!
Remember, stay healthy and happy 🙂
Also, keep a goal in your head that’s realistic to acheive. Once you’ve acheived the goal, set on another goal. They can be anything simple like, i will lose 1 kg this week.

Replace sweets with fruits and stuff. Personally, i don’t really eat sweets and stuff, they just don’t taste like natural stuff do. But maybe that’s just me, i replace things like shampoo and facial products with ones i make myself. It’s hella fun and i’m obsessed.
Just sometimes natural is better because you know what’s going into the stuff you consume.

Eat watermelons instead of ice-cream! It’s delicious, especially in summer and when it’s chilled. Personally, it’s my guilty pleasure to cut up a large watermelon in quarters and cut a quater each day into pieces to eat throughout the whole ay by myself.
But then people would be like, where’s the watermelon?

Drink loads of water. It’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger and it helps stop boredom eating. Chug a big glass of water before dinner and you will feel fuller and eat less. Good luck.
