when you choose eyeshadow colours it could also depend on your eye colours certain colours suit you more then others, another tip would be that choose a colour for example if you choose a nice dark brown look for a lighter brown that suits that colour and normally that helps you heaps.

by the way, maybe you should consider investing in an eye shadow blending brush, it helps combine the colours really well (for powder that is).

I prefer powders too,
I start with a dark colour and apply between the top lashes and crease, then a medium colour just up half way, then a very light colour to the eyebrow and blend, blend, blend. So I have the effect of it diminishing from dark to light.
Usually I use nutral tones, browns ect.
But for a more dramatic look when going out, a smoky look is more my preference. -

I prefer a powder as well. I like to work with three colours. a light, medium and dark colour. I apply the light colour to the entire lid and up to the brow. the medium tone I apply all over the lid and the darker colour I apply around the outer edges and blend.

i find the cremes too heavy for me, i dont know if i am alone in this but i find they leave my eyes feeling oily and heavy, so i prefer powder, i usually use a brush to apply my base colour, then work in one or some times 2 other colours over the middle and upper lid, the idea is to blend, you should never see where the colours change, that is why i use a brush as it is much easier to blend.
Also a tip, if you wear glasses always check with your glasses on becasue you can get some really nasty looks, it looks fab until you put your glasses back on then it is just scarey! -

i find that practicing on the back of my hand is a good idea of what the colours will look like when blending shadow . and be careful to make your eyes match (duh! i know, but people get it wrong all the time). you should probably use a brush instead of the little foamy thing in the compact too (brushes are easier to blend with). i could never decide between powder or cream, i find they both crease. creams don`t powder off and leave shadow marks under your eyes, but it`s easier to blend powdered colours into eachother.
