An open letter to Britney
Dear Britney,
We’re writing this because we believe you have the ability to turn your life around. Yes, we’ve seen the footage and photographs and read the stories about everything you’ve done in the past 12 months. There’s no doubt that, with the death of someone close to you, a stint in rehab, your divorce and losing custody of your kids, 2007 has been one hell of a tough year.
You’ve suffered a very public breakdown – and we’re not convinced we could have dealt with it any better had it been us, especially given the public scrutiny. Sure, the paps and tabloid articles are part and parcel of the million dollar deals and international stardom, but they do add more pressure to an already volatile situation. Who can really judge you and say they wouldn’t unleash an umbrella on a photographer’s car in the same situation? The thing is, we don’t think all of this reflects who you really are. And we’d like to take the opportunity to remind you about the Britney we believe in. You’re a talented young woman – a singer, songwriter and performer – who’s entertained countless numbers of people around the world.
In less than a decade, you’ve sold over 83 million records and had seven chart topping singles. Those records have placed you in the company of music icons like Michael Jackson, The Beatles and Madonna.
You’re a naturally beautiful woman who’s never felt the need to conform to the Hollywood scary-skinny type. For most of your career, you’ve portrayed a picture of fitness and health. We love that you’ve been snapped eating ice-cream, quoted as saying you still indulge in rich Southern foods and that you’re happy to wear a skimpy costume on stage. Others might have bagged your foray into acting, but the reality is you headlined a film that cost $12 million to make and grossed five times that. But most importantly, you’ve produced two gorgeous sons. And it’s because of them we’re convinced you’re going to pull it together.
Don’t get us wrong, Brit. We don’t feel sorry for you. There are people in this world who deserve our compassion far more than you do. We just think it’s about time someone reminded you of all the positives. Please don’t become another one of those child stars who threw everything away. In 15 years time we don’t want to be watching the tragic story of your decline on shows like Where Are They Now? This is our show of support and encouragement. We hope you sit up and take notice. Britney, we believe in you. Start believing in yourself!
