Cosmetics prices

What exactly are you paying for with these products – it’s a combination of the ingrediens and the brand name, isn’t it?

I just want to know how certain manufacturers can sell, say, a moisturiser for $120 and others for $30 when both products do the same things in the same way and rate; maybe the only difference is fragrance type.

I guess only the wealthy people buy those expensive products because most ‘ordinary’ people can’t justify something for $100 in a 50ml package.

  • Sorry if I’m sounding angry, I’m not but it just baffles me. I’m convinced the difference is because of the brand name.

I think you pay just for the brand sometimes

As with anything, I am of the opinion that there is always a connection between quality.
However, sometimes cheaper brands do the job just fine.
I tend to buy more expensive where it matters – i.e. creams and foundation, and then go cheap on the latest colour eye shadow that I am not going to use for long anyway.

Also, the huge cosmetic houses such as L`oreal which includes brands like Lancome, Biotherm. Ralph Lauren, Matrix, Redken, Armani, Kerastace, Maybelline…. – they have a huge research budget – and you`d like to believe that the intensive research and development into the prestive brands is eventually going to move into and benefit their mass-products – wouldnt you?

i dont think price really matters justr because something is $100 and another is only $50 doesn tmake the $100 products better it depends on ething works well for some people and not others!
yay i`m new and this post gives me my first point lol

You don`t have to be brand loyal either. A lot of cosmetic companies want you to buy their cleanser, toner and moisturiser and say all three will work better if used together. Some products do compliment each other but sometimes you can use a $10 cleanser with a $100.00 moisturiser.

Thanks everyone. It just puzzled me a lot. I forgot to think about quality of ingredients, but I`m not going out to buy the most expensive products and assume that they`re the best quality. Experience and reviews from others are probably the best indicator, which is why this site rocks!

Product packaging can have an influence on price, and probably if a brand has a good name they can bring practically anything out and slap a high price on it.

I used to think expensive meant more better for my skin and I`d spend huge amounts of money on cleansers, toners and moisturisers. I now look at ingredients and really like using natural products or products which don`t include nasties. I alternate between QV Gentle cleanser and Cliniques 3 Step. I find that if I use the 3 step too often my skin dries out. I also like Dermalogica and have been to salons where their products were used for a facial and have tried many of their samples. My spurlge is probably on rich night creams but I do occassionally just put on some rosehip oil as a night moisturiser which is really cheap.

Yes thats right,GG, The cheaper brands, Im not saying all, but some, im told put cheap fillers included in thier product, like lanolin. For me, I like Clarins, and yes they are pricey, But if you tend to purchase at the time of getting a bonus gift, its better and more inviting.
Talking about Cosmetic houses/brands. I once had a green face powder compact that was covergirl, brand, exactly the same in presentation and appearance,as Clinique green compacts. When my friend saw it she said Clinique owned Cover girl.
    I was so suprised!

Who knows? That was just my understanding. Anyway I don`t buy really expensive products because I know the mid range work for me (even some of the cheaper brands) I love Natio at the moment – super cheap but fabulous. I have used products from across the board. Though I am seriously considering upgrading to Dermalogica – I`ve used samples and they`re gorgeous products. It`s all just money making for those companies so I wouldn`t be surprised.

I did notice that the Max Factor Masterpiece Mascara & the Covergirl Lash Extract are virtually identical.
