Cold cures

I’ve just been hit with a nasty cold and have a sore throat and sore muscles. I have very little energy and have a baby to look after so it’s difficult for me to have a sleep and I’ve been having a quick nap while bubs is having her nap. does anyone have any tips for helping to get rid of a cold I’m particularly interested in natural remedies as I’m breastfeeding so I don’t want to take heavy medications.

Drink plenty of water and raw garlic would help fight off colds because it has antibacterial and antiviral properties, the down side is that you will have garlic breath. But there are garlic tablets available. Ive tried pickled garlic and its really nice, doesnt seem to have that overpowering garlic smell!

My cure all for a cold has never failed me is similar to brettc, whether i feel it coming and get in early or wake up with it full on.
Ascorbic Acid (vit c) powder in o.j every hour, 1 zinc tablet 3 times per day, 1 calcium/magnesium tablet 3 times per day.
The ascorbic acid is the winner, you saturate your system with vit c (tablets not as effective). if i take it this often for the first day then i usually feel much better the next day, then i take it 3 -4 times that day. I haven`t had a cold or flu last longer than 3 days since doing this routine.
Once you start to feel better, scale down the ascorbic acid to 1 – 2 times per day until you are all better, you will know you`ve reached saturation point when you have to bolt for the loo!

Loading is great lol. some of my mates are a bit hesitant because they want their bodies to fight it and everything but if the need to do it they all agree it works. Just be careful not to overload of course.
And benadine every couple of hours is good for a sore throat, but get the concentrated version. the diluted version is yuck and doesnt really work.

Staying well hydrated is also good. Plenty of water and herbal teas are great for me.
I would like to try BrettC`s suggestion on `loading` though.

Whenever i feel a cold coming on I load up on multivitamins, echinacea forte, fish oil and any of the healthiest foods i can find in my house. Having any of the `superfoods` you hear about are great. A good thing to do is exercise and then consume all the goodies within an hour as your body absorbs and gets the most out of the vitamins in that time.

  • I also purchased some Fess Nasal spray a couple of weeks ago while I was sick. I`ve done a review on this product. It helped clear up my head and stuffy nose and was suitable to take while I was breastfeeding. I also have the Fess baby nasal drops as well which comes with this little pump to help clear up bubs nose.

I used to get sick heaps until a friend recommended that I start taking zinc tablets which boost your immune system. Now I swear by them! I take one zinc and one vitamin c tablet every morning and I hardly ever get sick – I think I`ve been sick maybe twice this year? And when I am sick I get better much quicker too! When I`m sick I also chuck heaps of garlic and chilli in my meals – I put chilli on everything! Burns the throat, clears the nose and makes me feel a whole lot better! And you can`t beat fresh garlic of course… I`m not a fan of Lemsip either – but def of the fresh lemon and honey – when I was little my mum used to heat up some honey and fresh lemon juice in a little egg cup and mix it so it was kinda like a paste and I would keep that by my bedside all night so if I woke up coughing or anything it would sooth my throat… I also eat lot`s of vegemite on toast when I`m sick coz there`s heaps of vit b and stuff in it which helps as well…
