Viruses ( Facebook)

Hi girls, just a little warning, yesterday i was sent an email through face book from my cousin who lives in Paris. She wanted to share some pictures of herself to me. I logged unto this site which said download to see pictures, it was some sort of Archive. Well im not too great on the computer and thought it would be safe, well it wasn’t it crashed the whole system, AVG did eventually find it and tried to destroy it, but it didn’t work. Iam not going to go into facebook, my GF got a virus also from facebook, and that was a couple of days ago, and it crashed her system as well. I don’t understand why people create these viruses, i think their pretty sick dudes. Iam lucky my son just bought me a new box, early christmas present, good kid. So please just be carefull and double check what you are downloading. Cheers girls

I don’t have a facebook, but an easy trick to make sure you’re browsing safely is to hover over the URL with a mouse, and look down at the status bar (bottom of your browser). It will show you the full address of where the URL leads to – so you know whether it’s a trusted site or not.

yeppppppppp got a million of them.

apparently if you look closely there is lots of spelling mistakes in them.

im not worried about them for me, because I dont click on them and so on-I always go to facebook directly.
Im actually worried about my friends accidently clicking on one or something and getting a virsus, and these ppl have access to their facebook page- which means they have access to mine- my details, which only my friends can see, my photos and so on?

Yep last week I got heaps like that, also links on my wall of the same type, just don’t click on the links and you will be fine 🙂 Thankfully I have not had any this week, touch wood, lol.

I received an email SUPPOSEDLY from facebook saying a particular friend had some video of me (which I knew was impossible as she lives over 1000 km away from me) and the link to click on – I deleted it instantly and deleted it from my deleted box. Has anyone received a similar email?

Thanks for the tip on the pasword manager Alice I use Firefox so I am off to check that out now 🙂

  • It’s not facebook that is the problem, it’s the links. If you’re unfortunate enough to be running microsoft windows, don’t ever download and open archive files without scanning them with for viruses first!

It’s actually quite common for viruses to have a name like
    ‘photo.jpg . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .exe’ (but with spaces not dots) because they know that windows explorer will display the name as ‘photo.jpg’ with a scroll bar to see the rest of the name. If you don’t notice the scroll bar, it’s very easy to think that you’re opening a photo.

For those fake sites, the best defence is to use the password manager in firefox, because it will only fill out the information when you’re on the real site. If the password manager doesn’t fill in the login information, you’ll look again at the address bar and realise that it’s fake.

Thanks hot chillies, a few of my contacts have been sending similar Facebook messages and I have been ignoring them. I remember when hacking was so common on Myspace, where the hackers would set up a site similar to the regular login place but at a different URL saying that you needed to log in again. Using this method, they got so many people’s details!

I have been getting those facebook links from my contacts for the past week, but I have never opened up and downloaded anything from the links as I have already been warned they are links to viruses, normally they came with stupid messages like your hot, or I just saw you on TV, silly things that you know your friends would not say, lol. Anyway it seems to have settled down at my end because I have not had any since Thursday I think, hopefully they are on top of it now 🙂
