Hey darl,
Not sure why she would`ve said that, I`ve always been told you can skip it as long as you want with no real problems, there are just a few things you should know about skipping periods with the pill:
Say you skip a period one month, then let it come the next month. As your lining has been building up for 2 months rather than one, your period can often be correspondingly twice as nasty – as in you get heavier bleeding and more pain – this is what happened to me. So just remember that when you skip it, it can come back with a vengeance later!
Also if you skip your periods for a while, just keep taking the active pills for a couple of months, say, you can get what is known as `breakthorugh bleeding` – your lining has built up so much that the hormones in the pill can`t hold it back and you get some spotting (little bits of blood coming out).
As far as I`ve been told, there`s nothing particularly dangerous or anything about skipping your periods, but there can just be some uncomfortable side effects as mentioned above.
You say you wanted the pill to skip your periods, and I`m not sure exactly how you mean that, but if you mean you wanted to skip them because they`re always really nasty, I`d personally suggest just going on the pill, taking it and letting your periods come by taking the sugar pills for the seven days each month – if you`re looking to reduce symptoms this will do it significantly, your periods will get lighter and less painful and everything. Then maybe after your periods have lightened up you could look at skipping periods if you want to?

Oh thankyou.
Ok so I went to the doctors and I basically get it but the thing I wasn`t sure about what she said was that i SHOULDN`T really skip my period but I have read that it is fine to skip it for as long as you want.
Is that true.
Becasue that was basically the reason that I wanted it and she pretty much said no.
But she also said that she couldn`t stop me but is she right?
Thanks heaps you have all helped a lot.

Hey Hannah28,
Don`t be embarrassed at all darl, it`s extremely common for women to go on the pill to lessen their period symptoms (I assume that`s what you meant – you get strong pain or heavy bleeding or something along those lines?)
I went on it for contraceptive reasons and I never used to get REALLY bad periods (compared to some of the poor girls I knew anyway!) but I definitely noticed a huge difference in my periods. Basically, any type of pill regulates your hormones and generally lightens periods, and the effects of the pill becomes apparent the longer you use it for – eg. your periods often keep getting lighter and lighter, until you don`t get much bleeding at all.
Some doctors even try to organise their patient`s hormones so they don`t get ANY periods at all – yes it is possible! I don`t know how much you know about the technicalities of the pill, but basically it usually contains something like 21 active pills (pills that actually have hormones in them) and 7 placebo pills (pills that only have sugar in them – basically they`re only to remind you to take a pill everyday) – when you are on the placebo pills is when you get your period.
However you can skip these pills and keep taking active pills, which means you won`t get a period, or you can get a pill pack that ONLY has active pills… there are SO many different options! I really recommend you go to a doctor, or, particularly if you`re embarrassed about it, a family planning clinic is really great for that, they`re so accustomed to dealing with things confidentially.
As for my personal experiences, my periods got lighter and lighter while on the pill (I did take the placebo pills each month), I got little to no pain, my moodiness got better, my skin cleared up… there are a lot of benefits, and it`s very common to go on the pill for bad pain. As for side effects, I think I got about one headache when I first started the pill (which probably wasn`t even from the medicine!) and that was it! It`s different for everyone, but don`t let claims that EVERYONE experiences weight gain and things like that scare you off – many people have little to no side effects.
Have a chat with your doc or FPC (family planning clinic) asap and you`ll feel much better about it! Good luck and I hope this has helped. Feel free to ask any questions you might have or be embarrassed to ask a doctor about, because I know the pill can seem SO confusing when you first start!

There is nothing to be embarrased about! So many women suffer from period problems.
I went on the pill when I was 17 because I had crippling period pain. I would vomit from the pain and couldn`t walk. It was terrible. Its a great option to choose, and it really has helped and I have not had side effects. For me there is still some pain, but not as bad as it used to be.
Definately see your doctor, or family planning clinic! Its better to sort it out quickly as the longer you leave it the more you`ll think about it and the more embarrasing it gets to face it. Good luck!! 🙂

hi hannah28
the best thing is to go to your doctor and they will be able to recommend the best one to be on. As some of them can cause you to put on weight, some are great for helping out with your skin and then there are others that are great for just making your periods less heavy. So it all depends on what your doctor recommends for you to use.
I am on longeran and I have found it good in the beginning the change in hormones was a bit strange and I found I put on probably about 5 – 7kg from taking it but once my body got use to it it was alright
