Split Lip Help!

So my lips have gotten really dry while I’ve been sick, and they split on the left side, and it’s kinda spread a little bit and is scabbing over trying to heal (crappy area, I keep re splitting when I talk and eat). I’m applying natural paw paw ointment (not the lucas one) religiously and drinking lots…. Any other remedies to get rid of it? So DO NOT want it in all my wedding photos!!

BG xx

Lanolips, the plain one in the white tube, is great as you can slather it on nice and thick which keeps the area moist plus it still looks good. I’m just getting over a really bad headcold as you’ve probably seen here and on FB and my lips were cracked and saw from dehydration and this stuff worked brilliantly =D

I got Urban Rituelle’s Lip balm in my turqouise gift pack and it’s by far been the best, I have severely dry lips, I’ve had to go to the doctor about 3 times because of it and that’s been the only thing that’s worked, lanolips isn’t to bad to.

I agree with all the topical treatments here, keep it mositurised.
From a nutritional point of view, make sure you’re eating well (including lot’s of B vitamins – get into the vegemite and bananas), drinking lot’s of water, and maybe up your protein intake a bit, it’s good for repairing body tissues!
And sleep! Sleep cures everything, haha!

Definitely Paw Paw Ointment, you’re doing the right thing. And of course avoid eating anything rough or acidic.

You could also try Bepanthen, the baby cream, at night when you’re less likely to eat it. It’ll prevent an infection and is super good for healing and wound protection if you can get beyond the baby powder smell. It’s used for tattoos after all!

Lucas Paw Paw ointment is the best solution!!!

From a wound healing perspective keeping it moist is what allows it to heal the quickest. So the suggestions of putting vaseline on it are good as that will prevent it from drying out. If your paw paw ointment is a similar consistency to vaseline it will work well. Put a decent glob on ie dont spread it thinly like you would for moisturiser or lip gloss but apply it so that it forms a protective barrier against the air drying it out.

Thanks all very helpful. Unfortunately I have to talk a LOT at the minute with the wedding so close (giving last minute instructions!) but will try out these suggestions. Think I met your lovely daughter at the open day ness? tell her I say thank you very much for the tips they’re greatly appreciate!

BG I had that exact problem a year or so ago (except I wasn’t getting married as well like you!) and it was bad enough that I had to go to the chemist to buy something similar to that Liquid Bandaid stuff – it forms a sort of gel covering over the area and allows the cracked skin to heal. I found it worked especially well at night when I wasn’t talking/eating/drinking etc and it kept the cracked area moist as well which was half the problem. I’ve tried to find the tube but can’t find it right now but I do remember it was an orange and white tube. Possibly there are other brands that make something similar too.

During the day it didn’t work so well because, like you, I had to talk and the gel covering kept breaking away. At night it helped a lot. During the day Savlon (of all the simple things!) worked well to keep it moisturised and soothed and also helped to heal at the same time. I had to reapply it a lot during the day but I did find these two things helped the healing.

My daughter has also come to your aid! (She’s 13!) and she suffers from very dry lips. She wanted me to add this to my post so here it is! She’s very sensitive skinned and suffers from badly dried out lips and she loves using the Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Lotion on her lips! This is the one in the navy blue & cream coloured tube but it also comes in the navy blue and cream colour pot which is a thicker version of this lotion. She finds the lotion extremely relieving for her dry lips.

Good luck with the quick healing process and I hope some of this helps! : )
