‘Smart casual attire’ ???

So I am starting uni placement in a week’s time at a non-government youth organisation and they have instructed me to wear ‘smart casual attire’. I am a little stuck on this.. Currently I work at a womens centre and generally wear jeans and a nice top and sometimes a black skirt or black pants. Would this still be ok? Not sure on how jeans fit into smart casual?? Also the tops I wear are definitely more casual than smart (colourful, flowy, no collars) – should I wear more ‘professional’ looking tops with collars etc?

I generally have a look around at what others are wearing before I start a new job to get a feel for it but they were all wearing a black uniform shirt with a logo — unfortunately I don’t get one of those though =(

Any help would be great… This is causing me so much more stress than it should! Thank you ladies! =)

Thanks for the update Supersarah. Sounds like you are doing well. It is interesting that you can wear jeans but it was best that you didn’t do so on the first day. You did really well and it is only natural to get stressed about it. I remember starting a new job after having been at uni for a few years and wasn’t sure what the dress code was. Fortunately the recruitment person I dealt with filled me in when I asked her. But it was stressful for me as I hadn’t bought any office type clothes for ages so I had to make do with what I had until I started earning enough money to update my wardrobe.

I was just thinking today that I would have to find this thread and give an update lol.

Thanks lalalani also, as I am required to wear closed in shoes I have gone for ballet flats. Would love to find something suitable with a small heel though.

It is all going well, my dress was fine and it turns out I can wear jeans as a lot of the other staff do. Glad I didn’t for the first day though. Can’t believe how stressed I was about it all!

Glad to hear it all went well

Places like Kmart and Target have buisness style shoes like these called “court shoes”, I get these for work as they’re comfortable and mostly flat but have a small heel, they usually have a strap across the front (similar to mary janes). They’re usually $20 to $40, they’re worth getting a few different pairs as they come in handy for any job that requires you to wear smart black shoes that are comfortable.

make sure you have basic shoes too.. a little heel is fine, but nothing too over the top. smart casual is about being comfortable as well as looking smart 🙂

Thanks for your help, i think for the first day i’ll wear a dressier top as shull said and find the lay of the land a bit more. No jeans though, thats clear now. Thanks =)

I would wear your black pants and alternate with a black skirt. No jeans. Any top would be fine as long as it isn’t see through . No need to buy a business shirt in my opinion if you have enough tops. You are not going into a commercial business so no need for business attire. Hope you enjoy the placement.
