Sandalwood oil for acne/acne scarring?

Hey everyone,

My parents went to Egypt a few weeks ago and my mum got me some pure sandalwood oil because apparently it’s used quite extensively over there to improve acne and acne scarring.

I’ve never used it before and was wondering if anyone knows how to use it? Do I just put it straight on my face or…?

I fond a few recipes online for a sandalwood oil paste but they all call for sandalwood powder which is not what I have.

Any help would be great!xox

Oh thanks – I was thinking that it was probably a bit strong. My face feels fine so far but I’m keeping a close watch on it to see if it gets irritated at all.

I’ve been doing a bit of googling and it appears sandalwood is apprently very popular for acne scarring even though I’ve never heard of it before. I keep coming across a sandalwood powder/rosewater paste and a sandalwood powder/turmeric paste which apparently do wonders but I have no idea where to buy sandalwood powder or rosewater.

I think that would still be too strong – I would use 10 drops rosehip oil to 1 drop sandalwood. From memory there are about 20 drops to a ml so this dilution should be fine.

Do you have any other carrier oils – they would be fine, i just suggested jojoba as that one is the closest to sebum.

have a look at new directions – http://www.newdirections.com.au/content.php?p=home-home-campaigns – they would prob be the cheapest for jojoba. You can also check your local chemist or vitamin store.

There are cheaper carrier oils out there – apricot kernal is a good one, as it macadamia

Thanks so much!! I don’t have jojoba oil (do you know where I can find some for a reasonable price) but I used two drops of sandalwood oil and two drops of Trilogy rosehip oil for starters so I’ll see how that goes.Do you think equal amounts of the two would be okay? I might only use this at night though because the sandalwood has quite a strong smell!

PS – good to hear your parents got back before all the trouble started! My dad got sick when my parents were in Egypt so they had to leave early – blessing in disguise!

    I found this warning:
    Warning
Sandalwood essential oil may be a skin irritant if applied undiluted to the skin. You should always dilute sandalwood oil in a carrier oil before topical application. Avoid using sandalwood essential oil if you are pregnant, nursing or have another medical condition unless under medical supervision.

I have been trying to find a recipe for you without luck. The following recipe would be very nourishing for your skin and the added sandalwood would assist in healing your acne scars:

    1ml Jojoba
    1ml Rosehip oil
    4 drops sandalwood

you can make larger volumes if you want or change the ratio of carrier oils as rosehip is quite expensive but I wouldn’t add any more than 2 or 3 drops of essential oil/ml carrier oil.

You definitely need to dilute it as essential oils are very potent and can do a lot of damage if used incorrectly ie burn your skin. The only ones I ever use neat are lavender and tea tree ut even then you have to be so careful as lavender can do serious damage to the eyes if it gets in…sometimes even its fumes are enough to cause irriation.

The best way to dilute it is in Jojoba oil – its about 1-2 drops sandlewood per ml jojoba.

I’ll have a look to see if i can find you any more info.

ps looks like your parents got out of Egypt just in time. My parents were ver there as well and the left on the Sunday and all hell broke loose on the Monday – they were so lucky!
