Power Struggle?

I work in an industry with mainly men, which suits me fine, I just find that some of them are threatened by my experience. When I think someone is doing a great job, I make sure I let them know, but when I am going well and my figures are up nobody encourages me or tells me I am doing a good job. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Jen. Was just about to post a comment in the whats annoying you at the moment and say I hate going to work and you feel your not acknowledged. I agree with you. Ive got a lot of experience and Im always polite at work and sometimes I think that co workers have seen this as a weakness and treated me like a door matt. I started out unqualified, now Im finishing studies and realised I know alot more along with my experiences which I didnt feel confident about before. Im also the type of person that wont tell what Ive accomplished so they think Im not up to their standards This has just given me extra fuel and confidence to kick ass! And guess what? Ive been offered a job of a lifetime from my other part time job and its what Ive always wanted. Now they ask me for advice!! More resoonsibility with more pay!!! Yay!!!Stick to your guns. You know your doing well.
Keep your options open, dont take their crap this is temporary to bigger and better things babe. All the best Jen

Thanks Roxymisha, unfortunately it does include my boss as well. I have spoken to his superior, confidentially so as not to get him into trouble, but I guess it something I just have to accept. I dont mean to sound whiney, but it would be nice to be encouraged occassionally.

I have had this issue occur so many times in my working life. You are so right about people reacting to feeling threatened (even though they are not necessarily conscious about it). My advice is to not think about getting any positive feedback from others, except from your boss. If your boss isn’t giving you feedback you might want to discuss it. Otherwise, don’t let colleagues affect you otherwise you might get burnt. x
