Completely agree. People have seen my posts in the past about how i get annoyed that MAC is on some silly pedastal as being the HG of makeup. Its not. Sure they do make some great products, but they also do some duds like any brand. And there are so many other brands out there that make fantastic products at both high and low prices and they dont get half the limelight MAC does. People assume, because its MAC it must be amazing. But I’ve had some MAC products that are rubbish (and then some I love and will repurchase again and again like my Paint Pot). Even their eyeshadows dont really impress me much when I can get another brand, just as good, even similar colours at a fraction of the price. It’s all about the image i’m afraid
I have some of the 88 palettes (Which are essentially very similar to the 120 palette) and i love them. I use them all the time.
I couldn’t agree with you more, I am so over hearing about MAC this and MAC that, it is so overrated, and yes completely agree they have some good products, but so do other brands, some of which are dirt cheap in comparison. I am over brands like MAC and BB ripping off consumers with their OTT pricing!! I am just as happy to spend my money on cheaper stuff and am not at all embarrased to admit it, MAC just simply doesn’t faze me and I don’t think any better of anyone who simply has all high end makeup brands in their collection than I do of someone who has cheaper stuff, it sure doesn’t mean that because they have the more expensive brand that they are necessarily going to be better at applying it, or look better wearing does it?? Haha that is my bitch for the day, haha, thanks Chrissy for getting me started on that, haha 🙂
Lol You are welcome Mel 😛 Glad we feel the same way lol. Its just something that does annoy me you know? To be honest I dont think there is one “Best” makeup brand. I think that each brand has its star products, and its complete duds. Much better to have a good mix of brands than just the one I think 🙂
yeh welll at my skool we dont have a policy for make up they just say dont wear anything too out there, my collection is pretty big i have a range of exspensive and inexspensive products, i thinkk the reason i spend my money on it is because its like a hobby to me its something i think i am good at and enjoy, i thank everyone on here for their kind support. i have a lot of tools/ brushes a 25 mac brushes and just cheap brushes, i also do watch lots of youtube videos thats pretty much how i got started, kandee johnson inspired me the most, she is my inspiration i also love blair fowler (juciestar007) and jlovesmac! there is so many talented people out there and i want to be one of them! 🙂
upon saying that while we are on topic, do you know if the 25 MAC brush set is actually real or not?? There are some crappy brushes out there to be honest, and I got one set of ebay that is totally rubbish, lol. I think brushes is the one thing that you are better off making sure you are getting good quality, because as Chrissy said it makes all the difference to the application of the makeup 🙂
no no i brought all 25 brushes indurvidualy not as a set and not off ebay 🙂

I ve said it a billion times before but the Urban Decay Naked Palette is fantastic! If I could only live with one palette/eyeshadow it would be this. The eyeshadows are the best quality and I have tried a fair few in my time! I dont even bother with MAC anymore!

I have a stack of multi colour palettes 🙂 as a lot of the beauties know, ranging from the 88 palettes ( 4-5 of them EEEK i cant actually remember how many, does that mean i have too many?)
I also own a few of the more higher end palettes such as estee lauder etc and really don’t see a huge amount of difference in the quality of the lower end and the higher end ones, granted some of the higher end ones have a smoother texture and apply more easily, but thats quite simply remedied by using a good eye primer first then the cheaper palettes have just as much stick and colour payoff as more expensive ones.
some of my favourites in my palette collection are NYX nude on nude box – http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/index.php?pf=S119 20 shadows and 10 lipsticks for USD$25 and the colours are gorgeous apply beautifully and are such good quality for a lower end brand, I can easily see the colours in this palette being a great dupe for the famous urban decay NAKED palette. and my NYX bronze goddess box, the colour range in that one is all bronzy tones though.
I love my 180 palette which cost about $28 and seriously has 180 colours in every shade under the rainbow http://ritualeyes.blogspot.com/2011/01/180-palette.html
if you are happy with what you have and suits you and your skin type then it shouldn’t matter what you paid for it, just that you love it!

Well at 14, to be honest, dont waste money on expensive makeup brands. I mean you have school 5 days a week, and I’m assuming there is a no makeup policy? (my school was :P) so yeah. Wait til you have a job if you want to start splurgin on makeup, and even then there are always cheaper alternatives..
Like Mel. I’m not afraid to admit it, my collection is FULL of cheap makeup. That said. i DO have some MAC products, and I do have some BB (among other more expensive brands). But I’m an online shopper, bargain hunter and did NOT play the ridiculous AU dept store prices!
Thanks to bh I have become heaps more savvy about where to buy online – whats safe, and real, and whats not. So if you ever decide maybe you want to get something online, feel free to ask the ladies here first if what your looking at is real and a good price etc and if its somewhere that peopel have bought from before.
I’m also a sucker for dupes – cheaper versions of a product. For example, I desperately wanted a Makeup Forever eyeshadow but was NOT going to pay $30+ So I did some research adn found a Coastal Scents colour that was supposed to be a dupe. It was only a couple of dollars and looks just as good 🙂
In terms of the 88 palettes, I bought these knowing what they were (and werent) and i love them. The same manufacturers make the 120 paletttes. They are a fanastic bargain especially for someone getting into makeup.. or someone who wants to play around with colour.
Its probably a little early on for you now, but in the future you will find that the tools you use to apply the shadows can make all the difference. Certain brushes and techniques can make your shadow go from average to amazing – but it takes practice. Also good e/s bases can make a world of difference.. Youtube is fantastic too for learning to do makeup. I dunno if you have already explored it, but there are hundreds, if not thousands of tutorials on there. I watch them all the time 🙂
Anyways, Dont think anyone was saying you were silly for getting one. Alot of people dont realise that its a “fake”. But that being said, alot of people buy and use these 120, 88 etc palettes. So its not that there is anything wrong with the product, or you for owning one 😛 Its just that I guess people want you to know that its not what it says it is, but thats okay, doesnt mean its rubbish or anything 🙂

Chrissy mentioned Sleek and I’ll second that. You get 12 highly-pigmented shadows in a palette for US$10, which is currently about the same in AU$. They have to be shipped from the UK, which costs $13.50, but even with shipping a palette from Sleek is less than one eyeshadow from MAC in Australia. I’m so impressed with their products – like any brand, there are one or two individual shadows that are a bit iffy, but I’m a convert.
There are a couple of individual shadows from MAC that I really want, but I’m going to wait until I can get to a Pro Shop in the UK to buy them – I refuse to pay the exorbitant prices here.
