My dog has pain-induced insomnia….any ideas?

Hey ladies

Just got our little puppy girl Sofie spayed on Thursday and ever since the anesthaesia has worn off she has not been sleeping because she wont lie down due to the pain/discomfort of her wound and stitches.

She is not responding to any painkillers or sedatives…… she wants to sleep because the falls asleep standing up and then falls over which wakes her up again. Its so sad to watch, its very upsetting.

Have any of you been through canine insomnia / sleep deprivation before? I hope there are not any severe side effects from a few days lack of sleep for a dog.

Thanks for reading
xoxoPPP

Maybe you should take your dog to the vet. Or buy sleep supplements. There are now many platforms where you can do this, for example ( https://www.worldpetexpress.net/) . There are various articles about this. Maybe it will help you!

Aw thats so cute! She sounds heaps smart!!

The commands my dog (Sammy) knows are:
    -Sit
    -Lie Down
-Shake Hands (its so cute how he puts his paw up and shakes it!)
-Jump (Either over something or through a hula-hoop)
-Up (My dog also either jumps up on me or if I point to a chair he knows to jump up on it)
-Dinner! (he wags his tail heaps coz he gets warm, canned food for dinner – yay! Lol)
-Get it! (After I throw a toy, he runs and gets it)
-Give it to me (I put my hand out and he drops the toy in my hand)
-Stay (he sits and stays for like 30 secs then he gets bored so he gets up and starts wandering around lol)
    -Come!
-Walkies! (Lol my bro made that up. It’s to go for a walk obviously)
-Outside! (I point to the door and he knows that he can’t stay inside and he has to go out – only coz he loses A LOTTTT of fur!! thats why he cant stay inside)
-Inside! (I open the door and open my arms and he jumps into them!)
    -Mummy (Me)
-Grandma (My mum) He doesnt really care about my bro or dad lol.
-Water! (He goes and drinks water lol but only wen he’s thirsty)
    -No
    -Good boy
-Shower (He runs away and I see fear in his eyes lol he HATES showers!!)
-Bye bye (He starts barking coz he doesnt want me to leave)
    -Release (get up from sitting)
-Bone! or Get your bone! (he runs around trying to find his bone!)

    Weird things:
-Sometimes he sits on the carpet, then random he lifts his back legs up and slides his bum along the carpet and just walks on his 2 front paws. Is that normal?? Does that mean something!?
-I wanted to teach my dog how to roll over, but I don’t know why but everytime I say ‘Roll over’ he jumps up on me!?!?!?!?
-When I say ‘Lie Down’ while he’s already lying down, he lies on his side.

    The commands Sofie knows are:
    Sit
Lay down (only when she is on a mat or towel)
Get your toy (she goes and gets any toy)
    Wee wees
Up (she jumps up on anything we tap, even our own bodies)
    Big stretch
In your nigh nighs (her bed – at night time when we go to bed)

    Other words she knows are:
    Din-dins
    Mummy
    Daddy
    Ta-taas (walk)
    Car
    her name (of course)
    No
Naughty (she knows this one very well!)

She also has little weird habits/routines things that she does like:
Toilet inspection (she has to inspect the toilet after we flush it if she is in the room)
If she sleeps/lies on our bed she will only do it on my side
Standing up at the kitchen bench when we cook, do the dishes or make coffee (but she is smart and knows not to jump up on the stove)

Thats ok Veronicaa – simple mistake, my fault – I should have used more punctuation!

But thanks for the congrats anyway.

Anyway I have great news – she is asleep in her bed right now! We tuckered her out with some gentle playing and I guess some of the pain must have gone away.

I guess we just freaked out cos she is our first pet and in fact our first dependent (no kids lol)

She sleeps in our room. She always has.

Thanks Veronicaa, we have actually had her since May 2009 (she is almost 11 months old). We have tried everything.

Since my post this morning some progress has been made – she had an injection at the vet of a painkiller and sedative (which doesnt seem to have had any effect lol) but we have also gotten some gauze and taped it over her stitches which she seems to like. We have placed some Johnson’s baby bedtime oil on the back of her neck and a couple of hours ago we let her outside to see what she would do by herself (thought she needed some privacy so we spied on her from the living room window) and she actually curled up under a tree and went to sleep for an hour!

So we now assume she has some sort of anxiety issue from being inside as she has now come back inside and is just standing up staring at the wall with her back arched and tail between her legs (won’t lie down or sleep) and every now and then she frets and runs around for a couple of seconds.

    This is so weird.

Oh also how do u know that she doesn’t sleep at night (coz I’m sure your asleep?) or does she sleep in ur room?
