MOP or Kevin Murphy?

Hi beauties,

I desperately need some help choosing new hair products which are natural/organic and sulfate-free. I have narrowed it down to two brands: Kevin Muprhy and MOP (Modern Organic Products). I really want your opinions on these two brands in particular as they are both sold at myhaircare.com.au and I have a 12% discount for doing a photo review yay (side note: I can’t recommend this site highly enough).

My hair is long (just past shoulder-blades), coloured a couple of shades darker than my natural mid-brown, naturally large curls but dry and prone to frizz. I also tend to get an itchy scalp, although this seems to be caused by sulphates which neither brand include. I generally GHD it and wear straight, although if I could find a really good curl enhancer I would definitely wear it curly more often! The issue I have with curls is that they tend to get frizzy/dry and the curl-pattern is quite irregular. I’d love something that has a reasonable hold without the crunch-factor.. if such a product exists :/

These are my choice for Shampoo & Conditioner:
MOP C-Straight Smoothing
MOP C-System Hydrating
MOP C-Curl Curl Enhancing
Kevin Murphy Luxury
Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash (Not sure but thought I might need a clarifying shampoo occassionally as I still have ¾ of my Redken Smooth Down Serum left and am pretty sure it contains silicones..)

Choices for Curl-Enhancer:
MOP Spray Pomade
MOP Curl Defining Cream
MOP Liquid Wax
Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion
Kevin Murphy Easy Rider
Ohhh so many products.. I’m SO CONFUSED!!

Do you think I should be using a different shampoo & conditioner depending on whether I style curly or straight? Or will general hydrating products work well with both?

Thanks so much for your thoughts in advance… and I’m sorry about the super-sized post..

It sounds good thanks heaps for your reviews Sneaky, it sounds like the s & c are the way to go but when it comes down to styling products you just can`t beat redken 🙂

Sorry for the delay beauties, I`ve had a bit of dramatic few weeks but here`s my reviews of the KM Luxury Wash & Rinse:
So far I`m very happy with both. The wash is creamy and foams up almost as much as Redken even though there`s no sulphates. It`s so effective at cleaning my hair that I think a clarifying shampoo is going to be a very rare thing from now on.. every 2 months maybe? I did make the mistake of of double washing with it a once which I found too drying, but just washing the once and adding a little water/tiny amount of extra wash when needed seems to be doing the job very well. It`s very moisturising, but not as good at smoothing as the Redken Smooth Down I was using before. My scalp has almost no itchiness or irritation now and I seem to get longer out of each wash, although the styling seems to hold a little less well than with Redken.
The rinse is equally good, super thick and very moisturising. Unlike some other moisturising conditioners this one doesn`t weigh my hair down or deposit excess product. My hair has great body and looks clean yet moisturised. It feels soft and healthy. I love the way the packaging looks but can see the boxy shapes will make it hard to get out the last few bits of product. The smell is different but I like it. I`m not a big fan of herbal smells but these seem more sophisticated than other natural brands I`ve tried, and the herb smell goes away once dry. I would definitely recommend it BUT it is not my HG, I will be trying at least O&M, MOP and Terax before settling down with one for a while..
I also bought the MOP straightening cream and am not too impressed. It seems a bit drying and simply does not compare to my previous Redken Align 12. It doesn`t hold the style as well and straightening takes a bit longer. I will try straightening without the cream at all (just using a leave-in & serum) to see if that works any better then report back.

I love MOP products, especially their glossing shine spray.

Not really a fan of KM, didn`t find them moisturising enough..looked at the ingredients & all it contains is water & essential oil fragrances..not worth the price IMO.
Although my hairdresser did wash my hair with the Angel Wash/Angel Rinse by KM the other day & it smelt divine 😛

Excellent! I look forward to your review:)

I am yet to use the two together which is why I haven`t posted a review yet!
I did the conditioner wash with the KM which was fantastic but the next time it needed a wash I dyed my hair, then last night I washed with the shampoo and used the born again mask. So far I love it. The shampoo foams really well for a sulphate free shampoo, and it gave my hair all the moisture it needed (A LOT). Will post details as soon as I use them both together.. so maybe early next week? I have to restrict shampoo washing to 2-3 times weekly or my hair starts to go crazy lol

Great! Thanks so much for your explanation. I have most of those products so I will give that a go. I also may have made the mistake of not putting in a leave in product and that makes my hair a bit frizzy. If it doesnt work next time I will take a look into swapping it.
How are you liking the KM s&c? I am considering ordering the Angel set but my hair is in such bad condition, I need something ultra repairing and nourishing.
    Thanks again 🙂

Oh ps this is on wet hair.. forgot to mention that

    Oh that`s such a shame Paza 🙁
Here`s what I do EXACTLY. Apply about a 20c size dollop of KM Leave-In Luxury and comb through. Mostly of it goes on the ends/mid-length but I comb a little through the roots. Then apply 2- squirts of Redken Smooth Down Serum in the same way, combing through again. Next I put on a 20c size dollop of the MOP Curl Defining Cream, and distribute evenly through the hair and comb through again. Then I take smallish sections of hair and twirl them fairly tightly and hold them. When I`ve twirled all my hair I let go and spray lightly with Redken Forceful 23 and let it all air dry. Maybe once or twice through the day I`ll wet my hands and just smooth over it if needed, but there really hasn`t been much call for it.
We do have different hair types so that may be the problem.. my hair is long (past shoulder blades when sraight), thick, dry and coloured regulaly so maybe the MOP is just too much for your hair? Or it may be going to bed with it in that`s the problem. The MOP seems to have a pretty good hold so if you`re lying down with it in it could set in the wrong pattern. Anyway hope that helps, obviously you`ll need to modify what you`re doing a bit as the amount of product I use would be way too much for fine hair. Hopefully you can figure out something that works for you! I not, check out the swap thread we have going, you might be able to swap it for something more suitable so you won`t have wasted any money 🙂

I recently purchased the MOP C Hydrating s&c and really like them.
I have fine, wavy, basically virgin except the ends, just under the shoulder length hair and I tried the MOP curl defining cream upon your rave Sneaky buts it just made my hair freezy, and really messy. It also had crunch factor in some parts. I put it on damp hair just after washing and then went to bed. Any advise on how you got such great results
    Thanks

Thanks girls, glad I could help!
I bought the Kevin Murphy Luxury Wash & Rinse on friday because the MOP was just so wrong for my hair type, there was no way I could stick with it. Lol, lucky I`m not a poor student anymore..
So far have only used the rinse once for a conditioner wash and was very impressed. It`s sooo thick and hydrating. After I`ve used them both a few times I will post a proper review 🙂
