Male depression

My friends father took his own life yesterday, my brother’s friend did the same the day before, and I know of another man this year too.
It is becoming publicised that male depression is a problem in our country because men do not discuss their problems with their mates like girls do.
I just wanted to open this up for discussion because I think that it’s a very scary and sad thing that so many lives are lost. Men should be encouraged to talk more to their mates, and not made to feel like they should just deal with things on their own. I also think women are more likely to go to a doctor to talk about depression or anxiety and look for some kind of help.

My nephew took his own life when he was only 48 and it was such a shock and so unexpected. It was so sudden and it has taken a long time to get feel better about the whole incident. I look at his photo and get tears in my eyes. How sad and alone he must have felt.

I can`t imagine how I would cope without talking things out with my girlfriends.

Dimples and Jatz, I am very sorry that you have lost friends to depression. I agree with you, it definitely needs to be talked about and it is really important to try to change men`s minds on this one. I am a teacher and even when I know something is wrong with one of my male students it is super hard to get them to talk about it.

There is a lot happening out there to try and fix this problem, and I believe that over time it will have good effect. It really just needs to change in the minds of men. They need to be told that it`s ok to share, and to talk, and to seek help. I think it is particularly problematic in the trades, as the “”harden up”” mentality is strong on the building site, in regards to physical pain and definitely emotional pain and stress.

I so know what its like to lose a male friend. He would still be here today, if he had just spoken to a Dr. but males won`t. They see it as they are not manly then.
I have a friend that does counselling. She advertised for a men`s group to talk about problems. Took a while to get started but she succeeded. They all told her that when a male has depression and seek help they are seen as week and wussy.
There are so many males taking their life lately and it really is sad.
