Keeping blonde hair not green in chlorine!

Ok so – I’m going away for 10 days to Noosa, and seeing as one of my friends is not a big fan of the beach, it’s looking like most of the swimming will be done in the pool at the apartment block we’re staying at. Now my prob is, I have light, highlighted blonde hair (my natural hair colour is also light blonde) – and when I went to Thailand earlier this year I swam in pools quite a bit and think my hair went the teeniest bit green tinged. I didn’t have my blonde toner shampoo with me in Thailand, so I don’t know if that would’ve made any difference. Actually it didn’t really go that green – more just very yellow – hence why I’m wondering if I should’ve just taken my blonde shampoo with me? Anyway, I’m getting off track here – but does anyone have any recommendations for a shampoo that keeps the green out of blonde hair? I have quite dry hair so I need something moisturising as well…or do you think I’ll be ok with my blonde (purple) shampoo?

Hey Elmo, I find that a good thick conditioner or a protectant spray at the start of every day in the pool helps, although I`m a bit OCD with my rituals, my husband thinks it`s hilarious, I try my best not get the top layer of my hair wet due to chlorine and sun exposure!! I`m blonde highlighted with natural dark blonde/mousey tones and I go greenish and dull in colour quite easily! There`s a blonde toner that I use, it`s a cheapie from Priceline, Schwarzkopf Blonde Toner and it`s very good at restoring the “”blonde-ness”” and getting rid of any other tones. Otherwise I`ve got a clarifying shampoo from Joico at home which I use every couple of weeks it`s to get rid of product build up etc so this would also be good for chlorine build up too, I`m not sure of the exact name of it off the top of my head as I`ve had it ages but it`s in a silver coloured bottle with a purple top. : )

take your purple shampoo its the best thing or if you are paranoid work some cheap conditioner into it and pop it up in a messy bun, the conditioner will help stop the chlorine penetrating the cutilce also you could take a tiny bottle of a cleansing shampoo and use that it if does go green that should remove the chlorine and take out the green tinge.

Not sure about the dye thing – but even before I dyed my hair it was turning green.

I`d say that would possibly be a contributing factor….but dont hold me to that, im no expert. 😛

Maybe its the type of dye people use?

Thats weird I had natural blonde when I was younger…then have been dying blonde for many many years and I have never had the greenish/yellow tinge with pool water.
Yeh I have heard the advice that havovi gave….from girls I know, plus Cleo and Cosmo lol!

Some of the blond people i know their hair had gone green, it looks horrible but if you can prevent it you will be fine, i have never had this problem because i am a brunette

There are many products available that you can use that will help with this. You are on the right track with a blonde toner shampoo or (purple) shampoo. I doubt whether you will have any dramas if you use these.

I remember reading somewhere that if you coated your hair with a leave in conditioner it would prevent this from occurring?

I think you`ll be okay with your purple shampoo, that should do the job nicely.
