I’m aussie (born or adopted) but…
Hi all !
Ok – dont know if this will stretch ppl’s comfot zones on privacy or anything but i was curious to know more about those im getting to msg with lately.
We all have an interesting story or background, i figured id state some info on me and see if others want to share.
So its a case of saying – Im aussie, but…
I came from / have also been…..
And- Mostly it comes from the fact that im not aussie, but im Super proud to call this place my home by now.
So i was thinking , info like:
1) Where i was born
2) Where my parents are from
3) All the places I have lived
for me – Nat:
1) Born in Thailand
2) Dad from Bangkok, Thailand, Mom from Cebu, Philippines
3) Lived in – USA (cali), Thailand, Phils (mostly Manila), Malaysia (KL), Australia (Melb)
yay!

Interesting stories everyone. I might have shared mine fully but don’t feel comfortable since this is open to the public, wish it was member only forums! Basically I wasn’t born here and I still struggle to come to terms about a lot of things in relation to that. (Not saying anything bad about Aus, just the personal circumstances).
Hi Saltine, I hope that one day you’ll find a bit of peace with regards to this 🙂
Thanks Natrissara for starting this thread – it’s been quite enriching listening to everyone’s story (even you, Spunx!).
So here’s mine (in a nutshell)
– Born in Singapore to parents who are Peranakan (Chinese who mingled with the local Malays & speak Malay too), also born in Singapore.
– Lived in the UK for a bit but didn’t like it
– Went to Uni in Perth (met hubby there)
– Came to Melbourne when my first daughter was 4 months old. Been here for 8 years & love it 🙂 -

HIHI Saltine – I started this thread back when I was newish here and when i wanted to talk withothers- and felt comfy to talk about myself.
As u know.. never any pressure at this site – and i guess- share what u want. when u want.Im also not aussie, and i came here 11-12yrs ago and somethings i loved about aus fast, some more slowly.. some i still dont get 😛
we are always made up of the combination of everywhere we know. Maybe in time u will want to share if u think its useful or helpful in some way. 🙂x

@ Mollygirl and natrissara: thank you darls. Yeah my parents have already told me if i do anything funny (in my case because i am with someone who’s non asian), my parents will disown me, just dont wanna know me, which i find really unfair, considering u cant control who you fall in love with, its a matter of heart. But yes, i know no matter what happens, i’ve choose the right choice thats to be happy with someone that i can be myself with and still in love with him after all of these years.

im super tired tonite so wont write much now, and more later on – but i can DEF relate to chunks of what u say Vivalicious – as being a mixed asian who also came to aus as an adult, and have loved the life here. some tings r never easy, esp when there is mixed cultures, and also family expectations etc.
and i know how u mean, that its somehow really sudden or wasy to feel happy to share about urself to this gr8 grp of ppl. -

Thats such an amazing story Vivalicious. Your family have been through so much and yet survived. That must be a wonderful thing for them to know that they escaped and protected you in the process and you escasped too. I am so glad that you have studied and met your man and you seem very happy. I can certainly understand why you havent told your parents and I wish you all the best when you do. Just remember, no matter what happens, at the end of the day we will still be your family and nothing can change that. Thank you so much for sharing your life story with us. It really is lovely to read about.

Well… i am not really an aussie, just yet but have applied for my Permanent residency and will get my Australian Citizenship after i get it. But i wont get it til next year though which is a shame…
But am born in Sambas (Borneo), Indonesia, Chinese Indonesian is my race.
Moved to JAkarta when i was 1 yo
In 1998, when the violent racial riot happened, my family sent me to Borneo to live my grandparents and studied there for about 1/2 a year in a catholic school, duing primary 5. My parents and my bros were still in Jakarta, amidst all the riot that i had to pray for them everyday. They had a lucky escape as it escalated even more to raping, looting and destroying all physical items and even murdering the Chinese.
They sent me to Kuching, Malaysia, so i could maybe get in into one of those school to learn English properly, but all the school were all so full from all Indonesians trying to escape the capital.
So they sent me to Singapore instead. I was there from Aug 1998-Dec 2005.
Came to Melbourne in 2006 for Uni and i took Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Criminology). My first year here as well i met my current man, we started seeing each other that first year then it became a serious de facto since 2007 til today. I havent told my parents yet about us. The last time they found out was when i was still studying and them funding my education, so they had threatened to take me home, so we agreed to hide it. I am planning to tell my parents this year especially since i’ve started my first ever full time job. So there… hahahhaha. Maybe too much info on my life? But i am really comfortable sharing this.. :))) -

aww…
i love reading all the info – from the very whirlwind to the stable.
this has been a really rewarding concept to put out here..
mostly born of my curiousity initially of who else was loving being in aus but not from here, as is my case. and also b/c i lived in other places a lot before moving here.the stories are fascinating.. and its NOT meant to be a comp.. obviously.. so to those who write their history is boring.. bleh.. u know that isnt true . globe trotting isnt a requirement to make a rich past.
but for coviering the 3 basic things as i set it up in the 1s post:
1) where you were born, 2) where parents from , 3) where lived so far..
i tthink its just fun seeing the range we all represent, and which of those 3 things are tied to australia and which are not.xxx
