Got through Yasi

Well finally got back on line, and have been through my first serious cyclone, and even then was lucky enough not be in its direct path. Blew like I’ve never seen before, the worst thing is the waiting, knowing its coming hoping it might go somewhere else. The only people who were probably interested in makeup were the journos
Anyway all is safe and well, the thunderstorms the next night was probably just as bad, had electricity crackling through the living room. A little worrying to say the least. A least now I can get back on line and check out this excellent site!!

Glad to hear from you guys in Cairns and Ravenshoe, those are two towns so very close to my heart. I was born and bread in Cairns and lived in Ravenshoe for about 12 years 😉 I have been through cyclones in Cairns and Ravenshoe in the past and isn’t it absolutely amazing that Cairns (the biggest town in this area) has always been so lucky to miss out on the major grunt of these cyclones. One part there it was actually looking like it was going to head straight toward Cairns, that is when I bailed up and decided there was no point going up there either, haha. This time round Cairns did really well, still destructive winds etc, but thankfully far enough away from the eye and being on the North side of the cyclone, there was minimal damage 🙂 Ravenshoe would be one of the safer places that i would be willing to head to when cyclones head this way, the old saying head to the hills, haha, well Ravenshoe is the highest town in QLD and has the mountains to help shelter it. Like Cairns cyclones will still pack an almighty punch even inland and up on higher ground, but the only thing that really is a worry about Ravenshoe is it is such an old town with old homes that I sometimes would wonder just how they will hold up. I know if I were up that way I would be taking shelter in one of the brick style buildings, haha. Good to hear how everyone held up 🙂

hi guys glad to hear you’re all safe .We got through it ok ,power still off and phone line is out most of the time ,I must have gotten lucky today they must have charged up the telstra tower,so I am making the most of it while it lasts. It took 17 days to restore power to our neighbourhood after Larry so I imagine it will take them about the same amount of time this time.It was pretty horrible ,that sound like a jet engine on your doorstep for hours on end,I’m just glad everyone here was so tired that the kids slept through the worst of it.We still have most of our windos boarded up,hubby doesn’t seem in a hurry to take them off. With all the talk of more cyclones yet to come this season,I’m happy to keep them there. Lots of trees and powerlines down in Ravenshoe and some people have lost shed roofs etc ,but no major damage to houses which is great. It’s amazing up here by 6am in the morning after the cyclone two of my neighbours were out in backhoes clearing the roadsBetter go now ,go to top the genertor up again 🙂

Thanks for the thoughts melmeko, up in Cairns, but spent 22 years in Townsville. I actually went to work on the Xmas day when the last one went through here, it was like cyclone what cyclone, but luckily everyone took this very seriously window taping, generators going, candles, radios, but you wouldn’t believe it Wednesday morning just getting ready to bunker down, guess what, radio doesn’t work, so I went and borrowed a friends, hers didn’t work, then the one she borrowed she had to give back to the owner, honestly the best laid plans. If I wasn’t working I’d like to go to Tully and give them a hand, so maybe in the next couple of weeks when I get holidays. Honestly the waiting was the worst, then having to deal with computer/tv junkies with no power. At least I got through some good books. Sorry I’m raving. Cheers my dear

I hear you completely Wishiwas20, this is my first night having power back on after a freaky experience. My second really bad cyclone, as I was born and bred up this way and we are pretty much use to them in the Tropics. However nobody could ever possibly be use to those big ones. I feel like moving away from this place sometimes, I really didn’t want to be here when I heard the cyclone was headed our way. Anything over a category 3 then I will definitely evacuate if I have to go through another one again in the future.
Hey where about up this way are you Wishiwas20???
