Dry Skin & Acne

Help! I have mild acne but dry skin, I always thought that it was more common to have oily skin and acne and I am scared to put to much moituriser on in case I break out more.

I am propably asking for the impossible but does anyone have any ideas/remedies to help keep my skin moisturised as well as keep pimples at bay?

I agree – you need to set yourself up with a regular routine – chopping and changing can also make things worse. There are other pimple treatments out there that aren`t as harsh as BP – and 10% is quite high to be using. I would either go to a 5% formula, or look at a different treatment, of which we can suggest many! My current fave is Ultraceuticals Ultra Clear Treatment Gel – because it works better than ANY others I`ve tried – including Dermalogica. I would also look at using Kosmea as they have purifying products which aren`t drying.

I had the same problem (dry skin with pimples), after trying just about everything out there is have found that a gentle cleanser and oil-free moisturiser worked best, i would cleanse to get rid of dirt and bacteria then moisturise all over then about 5 minute later i would re-moisturise the dry areas. the main thing is to find something strong enough to help the get rid of the bacteria but gentle enough not to be overly drying.you could also ask if you could try a sample of the product you would like to try. I hope this has help, and it is good to know that there are lots of people going through the same thing.

If you are going to settle for supermarket skincare try something gentle like Cetaphil or QVFace, instead of choping and changing alot try to stick to the one regime for at least a few months. I do think a better option though would be to go to a pharmacy and invest in some natural skincare, the parabens and chemicals in the supermarket stuff could be drying out your skin further. A`kin and Kosmea are well priced, not that expensive and I am sure your skin will really benefit from something so gentle 🙂

There`s also a big difference between having dry skin and dehydrated skin so make sure you drink plenty of water and use an oil-free moisturiser, there are some really good, thick ones on the market that don`t suffocate your skin or cause oiliness.

It can be a catch22 situation, the Benzol Peroxide can help clear the pimples but also exasperate the driness, it sucks. If you want to keep using the cream I`d only use it at night and make sure you really moisturise, otherwise try some gentler options but remember it can take a while for change to happen so you need to persist.

I have combination skin and mild acne especially around my period as it`s really hormonally influenced buty I also get dry, flaky surface skin too, this is partly due to spots drying and healing so I get flakes of dead skin. My nose can peel like I`ve been sunburnt, especially if I`ve been bad and squeezed gunk out of the damn large pores on the end of it, which I`m sure is down to a bit of dermatitis or eczema which runs in the family a bit, but as annoying as it is it`s not bad enough for me to bother going to a dermatologist.

Hi Liv it would be better to stop using the 10% as this would definitely drying out your skin and as Elmo said it would make your skin produce more oil which equals to more pimples. The best way is to moisturise and use a gentle cleaner that is suitable for your skin. Drinking plenty of water and eating healthy will help your skin. xx

I have tried the Dermalogica range but it din`t do that much and by boyfriend made me stop because he hated the smell lol

I haven`t really found anything producs that I love so I change around alot but I do admit that I mainly use brands from the supermarket because I don`t want o spend loads on a prodict that doesn`t work for me.

I do use a medicated cream from the chemist with 10% benzol peroxide which probably adds to the dryness but It has improved my skin so I am bit scared to stop using it

Dermalogica have a great range for pimples and acne called Medibac, and I believe Alph-H also do a acne range. Like Elmo mentioned it would be interesting to hear what you are currently using though and to try and eliminate the cause of your dry skin and acne. Possibly you just need a gentle range of products and if that was the case I would definately recommend Kosmea or A`kin, but there are plenty of options available, also your age range would be helpful in considering suggestions too 🙂

Liv what products are you using? It is possible to have dry skin and acne – particularly if you use too harsh products which suck all the moisture and oil from your skin, hence your skin will break out as it produces more oil compensate. There are plenty of moisturisers out there that will hydrate your skin but not cause pimples.
