Beauty Bible

Hey Guys,

I’ve just taken delivery of the 7th edition of “Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me” by Paula Begoun. It is basically a review of many of the major cosmetic and skin care brands (and each of their products) sold in America (unfortunately alot of Australian brands aren’t included 🙁 ) But it is a really comprehensive, interesting read. It’s not published in Australia yet (is due in stores in March I believe), but I purchased mine from Amazon for around $30 including delivery. Some of the brands reviewed include Clinique, Clarins, Estee Lauder, SKII, Peter Thomas Roth, Dove, Jurlique and many more… Paula has a background in make-up artistry, and she enlists the help of a Doctor in her reviews. The book looks at everything from product ingredients, to packaging, fragrance, textures and appearance when applied, she also cites alot of studies on the effectiveness of certain cosmetic ingredients. Definitely a good read!

I love her books, I think they are great – but like all advice they must be taken with a grain of salt. She often slams Dermalogica, for example, for being expensive – but the cheaper alternatives she recomends I dont find to be better, plus they dont last as long so you wind up spending more on them anyway!! I like to read the book but prefer to make my own choices. I do like how she shines the spotlight on some of th BS involved in the beauty industry though.

Im glad someone said something about her own brand – thanks Eles you are spot on. Paula`s review are not entirely impartial, I`d say it is clever marketing of her own line. Lets remember that each and every person has different skin and will respond to products differently, we are not all going to have the same opinions. There are definately some products out there that have ingredients which are not ideal, and are often used as `fillers` because they are…. cheap. Also, not all of her ingredient reviews are entirely correct, or contain all neccessary information about the ingredient. This `Doctor` is included probably to appear even more credible. Milady`s ingredient dictionary is great, I am a Beauty Therapist and I take it with me to work every day – its my bible.

My mum has started using Paula`s Choice products recently. She says that they are really good and very reasonably priced.
