Hi Girls! I was wondering if anyone knows anyway I can improve my asthma syptoms ie. cutting out certain foods etc? I have been on virtually most asthma medications but they dont really seem to do anything. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks x

Puffer is helping enormously, as is keeping my bedroom warm all night & I`ve taken to wearing a warm lightweight scarf now to keep upper respiratory tracts/neck warm constantly. and moved showers from night time or early morning to middle of the day (when I can), to minimise cold shocks. Seems to be helping for the moment. Scary getting asthma suddenly at my age!

Never thought I`d be asking a question about asthma, but I`ve suddenly (in my late 40`s) developed asthma for the first time in my life. I had my suspicions, confirmed by my GP today.

My trigger is definitely cold air and this has come on suddenly over the past 10 or so days.

ie when I get up in the morning I`m suddenly wheezing, coughing & sound like I`m coming down with a upper respiratory infection including my voice being hoarse – as the day warms up it goes away, only to return if I`m outside in the cold air at night or the following morning. My house is very warm, though I do turn heating off overnight & sleep warmly dressed under a winterweight doona. I`m not cold in bed or waking up with asthma during the night, but the moment I`m mobile in the morning, it starts. It took me a few days to realise it may be asthma, originally I thought I was getting a mild cold, but with it disappearing every day mid morning, it clicked that it was likely to be possibly asthma. Surprise at my age.

GP has prescribed a puffer today to use for symptoms & I`m going to also see if running my r/cycle aircon in mild heater mode overnight keeps the bedroom air warmer for early morning as a preventative. Plus not go out into the night air too much.

Has anyone else had asthma develop well into adult years after never having it before? and has anyone else had asthma where cold air is the primary trigger – what tips could you suggest?

I agree with makesmewonder, steer away from dairy. I havne`t found swimming to be that useful though I`m afraid.

Y eah swimming is great for asthma sufferers. Dairy can cause problems so try not to overdose on that.

when i was diagnosed with asthma.. i was told not to eat a lot of dairy foods
also when i was younger.. i went to these sessions on the buteyko method.. which is like a process where u learn to alter your breathing patterns and it improves asthma conditions, my asthma has improved but i`m not sure if it was because of that specfically.
but definately speak to a doctor – they`ll know best. x

Wondering what are u taking for your asthma?
You can do a food diary to see what you eat and relationship with your asthma, if you suspect that when you eat a type of food you have asthma attacks, stop eating it for 3-6 weeks and then re-challenge by eating the food and see how it goes. It is a long process but it tells you what u can and cannot eat.

some medications can also cause bronchospasm (means your bronchioles constrict), medications include aspirin and ibuprofen (nurofen/ advil).
It`s best to talk to your doctor about it.
