Are you ageing your Skin?

Just found an interesting article, that I thought some of you might be interested in reading.

“These compounds are included in anti-ageing products because they basically break down the top layer of your skin, increasing the rate at which skin renews itself,’ he explains.”

But with younger skin, which is less resilient, you’re corrupting the skin’s natural water-retaining protective function for no good reason. This can result in irritation – redness, itching, flaking and so on. However, more worrying than simple irritation is the long-term damage that could result from uninformed use of retinoids and AHAs.

“Because these compounds damage the outer layer of the skin, they increase skin photosensitivity, leaving skin far more susceptible to sun damage,” explains Dr Low”

I know what you mean, hell I had know idea there was such a thing as chemical exfoliating a few years ago, LOL.

All good I know what you mean 🙂 Just making it clearer for others is all!

I could always email mine and ask her what she thinks if you don`t happen to find out, let me know how you get on.
I only meant physical exfoliating, I should have clarified it better, I always think of these when I think of exfoliating, lol.

Just clarifying because you said you stopped altogether 🙂

I`m not sure what to think about this – I mean, it`s an interesting read. But I would like to hear a professional`s opinion. Might ask my BT.

That is right Elmo, the BT told me to only use chemical exfoliants as it is the actual physical exfoliating that was causing the damage to my skin, I am still continuing with the skin renewal process with the chemical products 🙂

hmmm very interesting, so I guess for people with younger skin, who have few skin issues, they should steer clear of the AHAs and retinol and glycolic stuff for a few years yet?
Maybe that infection named in the article is what that other girl was talking about in the red bumps thread?? I“ll post it to her in there…
Yes I think we`ve all been guilty at some stage of over-exfoliating. It`s a shame though because I think we can all agree that a good grainy scrub feels awesome! Lol, well, it feels awesome at the time anyway…. but not so good for long-term.

Very interesting article! I`ve heard a little bit about this before. It`s very interesting though?

Mel – you haven`t stopped exfoliating altogether though as you`re using chemical exfoliants now instead?

no problems scent-thought it was interesting, as im gulity of trying different products including anti-ageing ones and over exfloianting.. but i just love trying new products-and bh doesnt help this lol.

Mel, I find the same thing. I always though exfoliating heaps helped my skin, and i was a bit excessive with it, but i find now if i do too much my skin ends up looking worse and brings out my pigmentation too much!

Ive decided to just use my md formulation cleanser, a serum, and sunscreen at the moment- to give my skin a break and chill it out lol

I find my skin looks “”younger”” when I use a hydrating serum/moisturiser amd mask a couple times a week instead to counter the dryness from the retinol. I only use the retinol a few times a week now cause I know it`s meant to make your skin look younger but I find it may be too strong to use ever night cause my skin looks dry and duller which is the opposite of what it`s supposed to do! Im 27 and doc put me on retinol for cystic acne not for anti-ageing but I think every night is too much. Hydrating makes a big difference it gives you back that dewiness and plumpness.
