Am I missing the point? Primers

Went and replaced my foundation the other day. I usually stick to Mac or Revlon, have failed miserably with a variety of the new mineral powders, but ventured out to try Inglot (liquid). The actual foundation is quite good and I am happy with it and will most likley buy it again. Agood product.
HOWEVER, After much hype by the media and assorted magazine articles, I was talked into a foundation ‘primer’. Even bought the special foundation brush to assist in application.
Sorry, but I dont get it. I have applied my foundation with and without the primer – I can see NO difference. It doesnt go further, it doesnt go on’ better’, it doesn’t stay on longer. My facew looks no differnce I have also sought opinions from friends/family and have done the on one side of face to do a direct comparison. No differnce!
Far as I can see, a good moistutiser applied 5-10min before mny foundation seems to do the same job.

Fortunatley, I only paid $30 and in its favour it does seem to go along way. Anyway would love to heatr others opinions.

Is that the Inglot silicon primer? I have been using a Shisedo primer for years. I bought the Inglot one a few months ago after reading that it was effective for smoothing pores. I was silly enough to hope that it would actually do what was claimed (on another site) and that I could smooth out the bumps and holes on my face. I think I tried it once or twice, realised that it was not as good as the Shisedo one and didn`t “”fill”” at all, so it went back into the drawer and I`ve continued using the Shisedo one.

Reminds me that I`m almost out of the Shisedo and need to buy another tube, unless someone can suggest one that really does fill enlarged pores!

It`s supposed to make applying your foundation easier as Primer is meant to smooth out your skin prior to applying foundation. Also makes your foundation look smoother and more natural IF you get a good quality primer.

so what is primer sposed to do? make make-up last longer, or look better, or nothing at all or what????

I have been using a 2-in-1 primer and foundation called Silky Stay. This is a pretty good make up however it really isn`t any different to other make ups without a primer that I have tried. I can however recommend any of the Rimmel primers in the tubes – even worn alone they look fantastic.

Ok so just to clear some things up – the point of a primer is to provide a smooth layer for your foudnation to go over – so that your foundation doesn`t sink into your skin and clog your pores. It`s also to make your foundation longer lasting etc. But I guess with mineral makeup it`s not pore clogging anyway.
    .
Personally I prefer to use primer. I`m still finishing up my napoleon auto pilot primer – which I have to say I`ve really liked. It`s really gentle and soothing on my sensitive skin, and provides a really nice base for me to apply my foundation. I also have Eles retexturising primer sitting in my drawer which I will start using as soon as I finish the Napoleon one.
    .
Also moisturiser and primer shouldn`t do the same way (if you get a good primer that is) – as moisturiser sinks into your skin and does not provide a barrier between your skin and your foundation – although it will of course make your skin feel smoother.

    Dear Jessamy,
I use my primer before I put my foundation on and can see the difference immediately as it`s green I use it because being ill I ended up getting rosacea and it helps to conceal my rosacea and my foundation does stay on. Also the girls are right it does depend on what primer you do use. When I was younger and was given one for my wedding day I couldn`t see the difference. But as you can use it by itself on its own without foundation you can over time if not see it immediately the difference. Hope this helps but maybe you don`t have one that suits your skin. But if you say your foundation stays on the same amount of time then hon my advice is don`t use it hon if you aren`t getting any benefits don`t use it. For years, my younger years especially I didn`t. At the end of the day hon it`s up to you whether you use one or change brands or use the current one you are using. It`s the beauty of being a woman!
Hope I haven`t confused you more hon.
    Love Flutter.

I have tried a Rimmel primer and it did nothing for me, but the ELES primer I find is very effective. You can feel instantly how smooth it makes your skin. It just keeps my foundation put for longer.
I agree with AmyJ – it is just a matter of finding the right one for you.

I too was skeptical about primers. Sales assistant at napoleon put some on me and I didn`t really feel there was a difference until I took some samples home and tried it for a week. The texture when I was applying the foundation was different and gave a smoother finish. However, i`ve never really been able to justify spending on a primer. I think I`ll try the Natio one, cheap and I`ve heard good things. Anyone tried this? And is it ok to use the same type of primer under both liquid and mineral foundations?

It`s a matter of finding the right primer…I`ve tried a few, starting with the Napolean auto pilot with moisturiser and the Becca moisturising primer and they helped my foundation stay on better but didn`t look any different.
But after trying the Becca mineral primer I have been taken to a whole other planet of primers!! It is divine and I can actually see a major difference in how my makeup looks, makes for a very smooth finish. I am completely sold. I guess it depends on your skin too, mine is combo and I find the primers, particularly the Becca mineral one control oiliness very well throughout the day.

i think it depends on the product too.
i have used the Napoleon one, which really just was like another layer of moisturizer to me, so switched to the ELES retexturizing one and have found that to be fantastic. http://www.elescosmetics.com.au
it keeps my makeup in place for hours and hours, smooths the skin so foundation glides over and blends more easily.
i`ve also used the shisedo one in the past and really enjoyed that too.
