Advice – diy lightening

Hey there;

I know its not recommended, but i’m looking at lightening my own hair. I’m poor and cant afford to go to the hairdressers every month.
Has anyone got any suggestions on the best way to lighten up. I have dyed black hair, which I am having trouble shifting.

Thanks girls

    i have just had my hair lightened at the hairdresser and trust me its worth going to them. i have been colouring my own hair for over four years and it was getting to dark brown for me. im usually someone that doesn`t like paying lots of money for the hairdressers to do it, but i think when you want to go lighter from a darker colour they are the ones that no best.

    You probably won`t get the colour your after straight away if your hair is black but once you do you will feel so much beter for it. oh and when you get your hair lightened they will probably reccommend you use a good hair mask and leave in conditioner to replace the moisture loss.

    Good luck with it all, hope you get the colour you want

    Thanks Skitz, I`ll take your (and elmos) advice. My hair was a mid to light brown colour, but its been a long time since it had a break from colour.

    I will start saving up… maybe next payday.

    Thanks loves

    Lala – don`t do it!!! I accidentally dyed my hair black at uni (I`d been using “”Sun-in””, not realising how much bleach was in the product and tried to dye it back to a light brown colour at home) luckily I was going through a phase which involved listening to lots of The Cure`s music, so it was OK lol!! I had to grow it out in the end.

    Get a good hairdresser to get you to a colour you like that`s maybe not too far from your natural colour (what is it, by the way?) and then you`ll find it easier to maintain at home.

    I speak from experience here – I had a dodgy hairdresser `accidentally` dye the underneath of my hair black instead of brown – it took a LOT of effort from my hairdresser to get it back to normal – she had to use heaps of toner to stop it going orange too – it`s really damn hard!

    I was worried that might be the case. I have gone from brown to blonde before, but the black is killing me! Nothing will really lighten it enough.

    I better start saving!

    🙂

    I really urge you to have a hairdresser do it – if you had brown hair or something, it would be easier – but black hair is REALLY hard to get blonde – you`ll most likely have it go an orangey colour without professional help. You will be able to maintain it blonde once they get it there – but it will take time, and I would in no way recommend you try it yourself! Sorry Lala! 🙂
