Non-surgical nose job vs. rhinoplasty

If you follow any plastic surgeons or cosmetic clinics on Instagram, chances are that you’ve come across before-and-after photos of the non-surgical nose job. Non-surgical nose jobs (also known as liquid nose jobs) are fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Australia. If you’ve ever considered undergoing a traditional nose job, the non-surgical route can seem very tempting. But how do you know if a non-surgical nose job is right for you?

We spoke to celebrity plastic surgeon and star of E!’s Botched, Dr Paul Nassif, to find out non-surgical nose jobs live up to all the hype, or if traditional rhinoplasty is still the most effective option.

What’s your opinion on non-surgical nose jobs?

If you do your research, a non-surgical nose job can be an excellent option for anyone who wants to alter their profile. However, there are risks involved. “When done by the right injector, they can do a great job at adding nasal projection, but the risks of necrosis are high, and the treatment only lasts 6-9 months,” says Dr Nassif.

Can you tell us about what’s involved in a non-surgical nose job?

“A non-surgical nose job is when a hyaluronic acid filler is added to the bridge of the nose. Patients numb before the treatment and may experience some minor bruising and swelling following injection,” explains Dr Nassif.

How long does a non-surgical nose job last?

Depending on which filler was used, the treatment can last anywhere between 6 to 9 months.

Who would be a good candidate for a non-surgical nose job vs. traditional rhinoplasty?

According to Dr Nassif, the non-surgical option can be a significant first step for someone who has considered rhinoplasty but isn’t quite ready to take the plunge. “It is temporary, so it is a great way to ‘test run’ a new nasal profile and see if they want to make it permanent,” he says. Obviously, your results are limited with a non-surgical nose job, so it does depend on what you want to change about your nose shape. “Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a great way to build up the bridge, but can’t change the nasal tip or alar width.”

Who is a perfect candidate for rhinoplasty?

Let’s say you’ve tried the non-surgical option, or perhaps you’ve decided that you are more interested in traditional rhinoplasty. Before you jump the gun and start organising time off from work, it’s important to make sure you’re truly ready. “The perfect candidate for rhinoplasty is a patient that has done their research, has realistic expectations, and feels ready physically, emotionally, and financially to make the commitment to have surgery,” advises Dr Nassif.

What is the recovery time for most rhinoplasty patients?

And the recovery time is not to be taken lightly. “In general, 50-60% of nasal swelling subsided 6-12 months after surgery, but the final result takes 2-3 years to be fully healed. This depends on the number of operations the patient has had as well as skin texture and quality.”

What’s the best way to prepare for cosmetic surgery?

Dr Nassif recommends that patients do their homework when picking a surgeon, quit smoking at least 6-8 weeks before and after surgery, and take good care of your their overall health.

Who wouldn’t be considered a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

“People with unrealistic expectations are not a great candidate for rhinoplasty, as well as those that smoke and do not take care of themselves overall, says Dr Nassif. He also recommends that anyone who is pregnant, soon to be pregnant, breastfeeding, or plays competitive sports should wait to have surgery.

What advice can you give someone who is looking for an excellent surgeon to perform rhinoplasty?

“I recommend finding a board certified rhinoplasty specialist with excellent credentials, before and afters, and fantastic bedside manner,” he says. It’s also important that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and feel that they completely understand your surgical goals and desired outcome. “A patient should feel that they were listened to and that the surgeon spent an adequate amount of time with them to ensure that they are on the same page. Consulting with more than one specialist is always recommended.”
