Microblading eyebrows: before and after photos

If you’re tired of filling in your sparse brows and after a more semi-permanent solution, then a microblading eyebrows treatment could be the solution you’re looking for.

bh’s Sam recently visited Sydney’s Venus Artistry at Lash Central to trial microblading and take our beautyheaven audience behind the scenes of what is involved.

Nicole Kalazich, a qualified microblading specialist at Venus Artistry at Lash Central, not only gave Sam her on fleek new brows (as you can see in the video above) but also answered our questions on everything you could want to know about microblading eyebrows.

How is microblading different from eyebrow tattooing?

If you’ve been wondering what the difference is, Nicole says eyebrow tattooing and microblading are quite different from each other. “Microblading technicians use a hand tool to apply small strokes to the eyebrow to create hair-like incisions using pigment. Microblading is also semi-permanent and usually lasts 12-18 months. Tattooing can look similar but is very permanent, and usually done using a digital machine.”

How long does microblading eyebrows take?

Microblading eyebrows can take up to 2 hours. Nicole says it usually takes about 30 minutes to numb the area and then your technician will measure and draw the eyebrows outline before they begin microblading. The microblading itself will take around 20-30 minutes to complete and should be pain-free.

Are there different microblading techniques?

There are four different techniques for microblading eyebrows, says Nicole. You can choose which you’d prefer based on the result you want to achieve.

  • Combination: combines shading and blading (pictured below)
  • Blade and stroke: more hair strokes and a small amount of shading from the middle to the outer brow
  • Microblading: just blading without any shading
  • Ombré: just shading alone

Will microblading eyebrows hurt?

Microblading should never hurt, says Nicole. “The technician should apply a numbing cream before proceeding and apply numbing gel throughout the procedure.” Nicole adds that while she always uses numbing cream, not all technicians do. You’ll want to check this in advance.

How long do the results of microblading eyebrows last?

“Microblading eyebrows should last from 12-18 months depending on your skin. Oily skin types need to have touch ups more regularly,” says Nicole.

Do I need to do anything to prepare for the procedure?

Nicole says there are certain things that you should avoid before microblading eyebrows. “In case of excess bleeding or poor colour retention, I would advise against drinking alcohol 24-48 hours before your appointment. Don’t drink coffee before the procedure and don’t take aspirin or any kind of pain relief as these can thin your blood.”

How do you care for your eyebrows after the procedure?

Nicole advises you should avoid wetting your eyebrows for 5 days after the procedure. “If you accidentally wet [your eyebrows] just dab them gently as you don’t want to lose any pigment.” You will need to apply “Bepanthen Cream for 5 days, starting the day after your procedure. The technician should provide this.”

You will also need a follow-up appointment 4 weeks after the initial treatment. This is your touch-up session and Nicole says you shouldn’t be charged for this. “Some of the pigment will fall out, so we just need to fill them in and perfect them!”

Is there anyone you would advise against microblading eyebrows?

Nicole says pregnant or breastfeeding women should wait until after they’ve given birth or finished breastfeeding. In addition, she says to seek advice from your doctor if you’ve recently recovered from cancer, or have just completed chemotherapy before getting the procedure.

How do you find a qualified microblading technician?

“Ladies need to do their research when looking for the right microblading technician,” says Nicole. You should look at their before and after photos, ask where they trained, ask how long they’ve been qualified, and check their social media pages and website for their history. “I have had many upset ladies come to me with deep scars and cuts from so called qualified technicians and these scars can not be removed.”

How much does it cost?

Microblading eyebrows can cost between $650 to $1500 depending on the technician.

What happens if I don’t like the results?

Nicole says she has never had any unhappy clients but there are laser removal treatments that will reverse the results of the procedure if you are unhappy with the final result.

  1. I’ve had my brows microbladed a while ago and really love the results. Although I’ll still brush through some brow product, it takes much less time and they still look defined if I don’t.
