What is Botox: Before and After

Anti-wrinkle injections, commonly referred to as Botox injections seem to be a taboo topic, yet they’re becoming more and more prevalent among both younger and older women. So to find out what all the hype is about, bh's Kelly recently went in for her first Botox treatment and documented the entire experience. But before we get into the good stuff (like her before and after photos!), here's everything you need to know about Botox...
What is Botox?
Botox is a trade name for botulinium toxin, a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinium. Phew! So that’s the scientific description over and done with, but what does that actually mean? Well, scientists discovered several years ago that although Botox is a toxin, when used in diluted small amounts it has cosmetic and medicinal benefits, including remedying muscle spasms.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by blocking chemical receptors that cause muscles to contract, without damaging the nerves. So, essentially, those muscles become frozen and relaxed.
How can Botox injections make you look younger?
Because it doesn’t require going under the knife, the popularity of Botox in the beauty industry has increased considerably in recent years. It has a range of cosmetic uses, including softening frown lines, smoothing out wrinkles, and reducing the appearance of crow’s feet and other lines caused by the repeated movement of facial muscles over time.
How is the treatment given?
When used for cosmetic treatments, Botox is injected into affected areas during a very quick process (anywhere from several minutes to an hour) that doesn’t require anaesthetic. This makes it a popular alternative to cosmetic surgery as it has minimal ‘down time’ after treatment and the effects can be seen almost immediately.
How long does Botox last?
A Botox injection can take about two to five days to fully start working, and the effects can last anywhere from around six weeks to four months. After this time the muscles will regain their movement, but repeat treatments can then be given to restore the effects.
What else can it be used for?
Aside from the fact Botox injections can make you look younger, they can also be used to treat other conditions, including excessive sweating, incontinence, chronic pain and cramps. Researchers are also trialling Botox as a treatment for asthma and hayfever.
Before the treatment
Kelly first decided to try cosmetic injections as her fine lines were quite developed for her age (27) and she was becoming increasingly frustrated with the way the lines aged her face and the way her make-up would settle into them. Kelly explains, “I definitely don’t ever want that ‘frozen face’ look but I don’t see the problem with getting the occasional jab to smooth out my lines and prevent them from getting worse.”
Jennifer Colyer, Laser Clinics Australia Registered Nurse and Cosmetic Injector who performed the procedure explains to me that cosmetic injections can actually help to prevent wrinkles. “It helps to minimise [the] dynamic action of muscles and this decreased movement helps place less stress on the skin, helping you maintain a fresh and youthful appearance.”

During
Kelly explains what happens during the procedure: “It’s not painful in the slightest. Depending on your practitioner, your face will be wiped free from bacteria and you may be asked to hold ice onto the areas to create a numbing effect. After inspecting your face and problem areas, your practitioner will determine where they need to treat and how many mls are required for the desired effect. You will be asked to make expressions while the practitioner pinches the area or marks it before injecting a certain amount of the botox into it. It's a slight stinging sensation but really, an extraction [facial] hurts way more.”
Immediately after
Anti-wrinkle injections do not work straight away. Jennifer tells me they usually start to take effect 48-72 hours post-treatment and the maximum effect is “generally visible within seven to 14 days”. Kelly says there can be some bruising for up to two days after the treatment and advises to “keep this in mind if you’re getting it done for a special occasion”.

Two weeks after
At Laser Clinics Australia, a review is recommended two weeks post-treatment to ensure the desired effect has been achieved. As for how long it lasts, Kelly tells me that depending on the deepness of your lines it can last anywhere from eight weeks to four months.
Cost
Cosmetic injections vary in price, depending on where you choose to get them. At Laser Clinics Australia they charge $12.90 per unit for anti-wrinkle injections and also offer packages to make the treatment more cost effective. Jennifer explains you can get 40 units for $349 which will treat two areas of concern (like Kelly’s crow’s feet and forehead). “[I will] 100 per cent continue to get injections two to three times a year as I really love how much better and smoother my skin looks,” says Kelly. “I can justify the cost as it means I spend less on make-up trying to cover the lines!”
Have you ever thought about cosmetic injections? What do you think of these before and afters?

Some may think 27 sounds too young but I don't think age is always a factor. I've seen girls that are 18 and have deep wrinkles especially on their foreheads, due to genetics or premature aging. Likewise some lucky women in their 40s have hardly any wrinkles. The results here look natural and if it's helped with her self-esteem that's great :)

It's has nothing to do with age (Botox) many women around the world have this done either way they pay thousands of dollars just for this & for what not to last long & if they are that desperate for it they keep doing it for the end result. In my opinion this botox is just like plastic surgery & by the way I've never seen 18 year old girl's have wrinkles before not even deep wrinkles so I don't know what the hell your talking about- Scarlett_Angel.

I don't understand why you're arguing with me especially when you just said, "it has nothing to do with age", which is exactly what I meant when I said I've seen girls aged 18 with deep forehead lines. It's genetic in some cases or caused by premature aging just like some women get grey hair at a young age. Just because you haven't seen a younger woman with wrinkles doesn't mean they don't exist and you probably need to get out more or read people's comments. Also Botox is not the same as "plastic surgery" in any way. That's a scientific fact and not an opinion. Please stop trying to start pointless arguments with me. If you have a real problem with Botox then email BH for posting this article and don't take your personal issues out on me. Goodbye.

Let's clear some things up I'm not arguing you. YOU were the first to reply to my comment. My views are not the same as your's which is fair enough. I know all about genetics so you don't need to explain it to me, I honestly haven't seen an 18 year old like that & would be quite surprise if I did but if you have that's fine. I do get out & about & be involved on here with BH members. There are differences with both botox & plastic surgery which I'm well aware of I know their not the same, Read my comment again & lastly I don't have a problem with this article with botox or that with BH for posting it. I simply was putting down my view on this like everyone else was & because my view is different to others & your's too you had something to say about it. I don't have any personal issue's to be taking that out on you or anyone else for that fact.

I'm 29 and always think my skin has aged terribly, however it looks like the "after" photos here so I feel a bit better about my skin now lol. I've been considering Botox for years now as a preventative mainly as I do have those annoying expression lines on my forehead from looking up during makeup application and don't want them to get any worse like this. I read some article about micro botox ? sorry forgot the name now... where they just use tiny amounts and it's definitely something I'm interested in. I'll try to find that article as it's supposed to be even less invasive than this :) xx

I wouldn't do this in a million years even if I was rich enough. The natural way is better even know these results look great it's not you, It's not the real you.

With that mindset; wearing makeup or dying your hair, etc isn't the "real you" either. Whatever makes you feel better about yourself as long as it's not causing damage I don't see the problem.

Listen here:- Scarlett_Angel, Makeup or dying your hair doesn't hurt you for example if you use the right beauty products for your skin it's fine & dying your hair is not good if you do it soo many times but a few times it's not soo bad & any hair dresser would tell you that. This beauty stuff is harmless compared to botox or plastic surgery at least I won't be putting those chemicals into my body & I can grow old naturally. This is what every women would want the only difference is I'm doing it the right way & chemical free & I don't appreciate that remark that you said only spiteful people like yourself-Scarlett_Angel would say something like that.

Umm that's just your opinion and I never said anything "spiteful" about anyone. I love BH and the community here. You either misunderstood or took things out of context. I'm here for beauty related stuff like everyone else and not to debate what is and isn't natural. If you're purely into natural beauty that's just your personal opinion. Many women on here have had Botox or even cosmetic surgery, who are you to judge them? Have a nice day. Goodbye.

I didn't say you were being spiteful towards others I thought you were like that towards me, Read my comment again. You were the first & only one to reply to my comment & ofcourse I responded back that's the polite thing to do. I'm not judging anyone on here if they want to have this they can the choice is there's & it's up to them no one else can make that discision for them. I happen to be very opinionated on subject's like these & everyone has freedom of speech but I'm also very considerate of other people's feelings at the same time. Maybe you should choose your words wisely, I didn't misunderstood or take anything out of context if you honestly didn't mean anything by your first reply to me then I'll happily apologise to you for all of this.

While the thought of injecting Botox into my face is a bit scary I can't deny that the results look great - far better than you'd get from any cream and probably cheaper in the long run. Something to think about for a couple of years time...

The before and afters speak for themselves. I think I am going to save up and try it. Can't say that I will tell my family about it so it might be a sneaky visit.

So I am hitting 44 this June. I had lunch with a friend last week and I noticed that her forehead didn't move. Anyway we chatted that much in our short time together that I forgot to ask her about it. So she sent me a text and I had to ask! Yep she had 8 jabs for $300. This is tempting me. I just have a few forehead wrinkles that need to go so it is either a fringe or botox!

Just read yesterday another great review from bh's Michelle Blancato's on injectables. She liked the results and she said that for her the results wore off after 2.5 months. She did do it only for the first time and one area, just for natural results.

Agreed less is more. I would stick to targeting one problem area and let the rest age naturally. Mine would be forehead.. I have deep lines across my forehead and im 24.. I hate them, so aging

When I was 27 , I would have never thought about getting botox. Im in my mid 30's and I still think I don't need botox.

I think botox gets a bad rap (granted there is some awful botox out there) but it's very 'less is more' and as shown above results can be amazing!
