How to keep lash extensions long-lasting

You lay painfully still for up to two hours, fork out half your weekly wage and now, finally, you have the fabulous falsies of your dreams.

But unless you’re Kim Kardashian and can afford to get them replaced on the reg, you now need them to last for as long as humanly possible – which means there are a few maintenance rules you’ll need to follow.

Thankfully, Elegant Lashes Company Director Merryn Calear has got you covered with these excellent tips for getting the longest, prettiest run out of your lash extensions.

Oh, and just FYI: The majority of her advice applies to DIY lashes as well.

1. Prep appropriately

“Come to your appointment without any eye make-up on. Your lash technician will clean [your lashes] for you, but if you arrive with a thick coating of mascara it may be tricky to completely remove the residue. This can create a barrier between the bond and the natural lash, which means the extension won’t bond as effectively. As a consequence, the extensions could come off prematurely.” Noted.

2. Be attentive

“Listen to your lash tech’s advice. After a close look at your lashes they will be able to advise which lengths and thicknesses are appropriate for your natural lashes. For instance, fine short lashes will not be able to hold onto thick, long lash extensions as effectively. The weight could also cause the natural lashes they’re bonded to to come out prematurely, giving the appearance of damaged lashes. Fullness can be created by using other techniques like a stronger curl or 3D volume lashes, which are hugely popular.”

3. Steer clear of oil-based products

“Avoid using oil-based products on or near the lashes, including cleansers and make-up. It may loosen the glue bond holding your lashes in place.”

4. Don’t touch them

“Treat them with care. Avoid touching them when possible, rubbing your eyes (which you’re best not to do anyway) and sleeping on them. Swimming and showering will not affect them.”

5. Don’t pull them out

“Don’t pick at your lash extensions. Pulling out extensions that are starting to grow out is a big no-no. It’s like plucking your brows – they may not grow back, which goes against the look you are trying to achieve. Instead, sweep them into place with a clean lash brush and wait for your next infill. Your technician will tidy them up for you.”
