All you need to know about Fraxel
Ever wondered what it’s like to get a skin resurfacing laser treatment? bh’s Bree did, so she signed up for a Fraxel treatment at The Clinic in Bondi Junction.
So what is Fraxel? It’s a minimally invasive clinical laser treatment, which resurfaces ageing and sun-damaged skin to reveal a refreshed and glowing complexion in a matter of days.
Watch Bree’s video above, or check out her thoughts below. We think the results speak for themselves - just look at that glow!
Q. Why did you decide to get Fraxel? Who is it suited for?
A. After recently having a baby and breastfeeding, my skin looked dull and pigmented. I wanted to do something that would boost my skin and give it a noticeable glow, as well as soften fine lines and lighten pigmentation. But Fraxel doesn’t only help with dullness and pigmentation – it’s also great for anyone wanting to tackle the signs of ageing, sun damage or scarring.
Q. What does the Fraxel treatment involve?
A. When I arrived at The Clinic for my appointment, a numbing ”‹cream was applied to my face. After approximately one hour, the cream had taken effect and it was time for the Fraxel laser. The laser is a bright red light that is rolled over your skin in sections. The treatment itself took no more than fifteen minutes and felt”‹ slightly prickly and warm. I found there were moments of”‹ discomfort, but no pain.”‹
Immediately after the treatment, my skin felt hot, so cool air was blown on my face. My skin was slightly red, similar to mild sunburn. But the hour and a half following was rather uncomfortable – my skin felt intensely hot, so during the car ride home I blasted my car air-con directly on my face for relief.”‹
Q. How many treatments do you need to have?
A. It depends on your skin concerns and condition, but it’s usually between one and five treatments. I achieved ”‹my desired results after just one recommended treatment.
Q. Was there any downtime?
A. There was no pain after the initial one and a half hours of intense heat. Appearance-wise, the downtime was a lot better than I anticipated. I went to work the following day and my face was slightly swollen with what looked like pixelated sunburn. Over the following three days, my skin was really dark brown and began shedding, so when I needed to leave the house, I just popped on a big hat and sunnies.
Q. Now, let’s talk results! Have you noticed a difference in the appearance of your skin?
A. As I write this, I’m currently at day six and the initial results are great – my complexion is even and my pigmentation is almost unnoticeable. It feels like my imperfections were brought to the surface and removed to reveal a fresh layer of healthier skin. I’m excited to see how my skin continues to change over the coming weeks. As the laser worked on a deep level to stimulate collagen, I should see improvements every day.

Great review Bree! Fraxel has been on my radar for a number of years but I am yet to get it done. I had another laser (which had no down time) which was great for brown pigmentation but I would love to get fraxel in the future to help get rid of post acne inflammation and soften my fine lines.

I'd love to try this! Love the progress pics in the video. Would be a relief once the redness and peeling settled.

I wonder if there is a treatment to tone up the jawline - or any face exercises that might help?

I too have low pain tolerance (i even find facial cleaning painful!) so I don't think I can bear the discomfort nd possible pain post Fraxel treatment. Also the downtime of 3-5 days with peeling facial skin will prevent me from going outside my home. I have heard a lot of positive feedbacks but unless my skin worsens and if I dont have deep acne scars, I wont try it. I am willing to undergo Radio Frequency treatments though to help firm and lift my face.

Sounds like I could benefit from such a "Fraxel Treatment". I suffer with red skin and small spider veins in the face as well as some scars. I sure would love to try this treatment but I can imagine that money would be an issue for me. Sadly :(

I'm so confused about my best option.. I have freckles & want them gone! I've had SIPL before but it did nothing but cost money. I'm considering a chemical peel & fraxel but don't want to waste more money & don't know who to trust!

Thanks for the video! I have been considering laser for a while but I am a bit scared about different people's experiences (and the cost!)

I need this done, as I get older my skin is looking dull! I would be game enough but I wouldn't be going out anywhere special.

I'm not sure I would have the courage to do this, or that my skin would like it. It's sensitive and would freak out.
I tried a gentle peel at Ella Bache some years ago, and my skin reacted badly to that. Congrats to those that could do it though.

Would love to try this but wish the before and afters were more accurate, having makeup on in the after makes it hard to see the real results

I agree. The lighting is quite different in the before and after photos too.

I really want to get this done but a lot of comments are putting me off! I have not done any research yet mind you. A therapist at my local clinic suggested Fraxel Restore to make my skin glow but that I would need 5-6 treatments at $500 each to get full results. I've had laser on over half of my body and still get hairs so not quite convinced of results. I wasn't aware of the downtime and not sure how I'd go with peeling/pixelated/red skin at work! I would want to work from home or maybe do it over Easter! :-/ PS - My main skin concern is oil and acne issues e.g. lots of visible pores and scars (not deep)

There are a lot of cheap, nasty practitioners about, so make absolutely certain you go to a professional who knows what they are doing.

I had fraxel over a year ago and my experience was very different, i found the treatment so painful, i had to stop every few seconds due to the pain, even with the numbing cream. And i don't even feel a bikini wax! I consider myself to have a great pain threshold. My face felt on fire after and i had to constantly use an ice pack to stop the swellingn and pain, it took 4-5 days until i looked normal again, i saw minimal results, it cost me over $1200 and i was told i needed more treatments to see any difference! Hell no!
