Best haircuts for your hair type

Is it just me, or does it feel like the dawn of a new season is the perfect time for a change in hair – be it a new colour or a drastic cut?

But here’s my problem: whenever I get a haircut that’s more than just a trim, my hair doesn’t always look quite how I imagined it would. The shaggy lob that falls so perfectly on Alexa Chung seems to do nothing for me. You too, huh?

Well, this could be because you’re choosing a haircut that’s simply not compatible with your hair type. You see, just like you need to be aware of which hairstyles best suit your facial features, you also need to pick a haircut that will suit your hair type.

And because we want to make sure you’ve got all the facts before heading to your hairdresser, we got the down-low from David Keough, creative consultant for John Frieda Brands in Australia, on which hairstyles best suit different hair types.

BEST HAIRCUTS FOR FINE HAIR

David recommends that fine hair should be kept shorter in length – the maximum length being about shoulder length. This is because the longer your hair, the more weighed down it will be, making it look even thinner. He also suggests getting some long layers cut in to give your hair more texture and add more volume.

beautyheaven loves Michel Mercier Professional Detangling Hair Brush in Pink and TONI&GUY Volume Addiction Shampoo & Conditioner for Fine Hair.

BEST HAIRCUTS FOR CURLY HAIR

If you’re a naturally curly haired girl, David suggests keeping your hair long to give it some weight. He also recommends some layers – but only so many that your hair sits well and you don’t get the dreaded ‘triangle effect’ (where your hair is flat on the top but poofs out at the bottom).

In-salon tip from David: “Ask your stylist to cut your hair when it is dry and in its normal curl pattern. They can then cut the best shape and definition for your personal curl as all curly hair is different.”

beautyheaven loves John Frieda Frizz Ease® Unwind Curls Calming Crème and TIGI BedHead Control Freak Serum for keeping curls in check.

BEST HAIRCUTS FOR THICK HAIR

If you’ve got naturally thick hair consider yourself “a very lucky girl.” David says, “It can be cut in a number of ways depending on the texture (dry, damaged, curly, wavy, straight, etc). You can either have long, thick luscious locks, or a short choppy style.” The possibilities are (almost) endless, so if you’re not sure what will suit you best, have a chat with your stylist for your options.

beautyheaven loves Kérastase Paris Masquintense Epais (Thick), ELEVEN Australia Smooth Me Now Anti-Frizz Conditioner and Shu Uemura Art of Hair BB Thermo Cream.

  1. I’ve always had thick hair. At the moment I’m letting it grow after having it very short. I’ve had it shoulder length hair in the past but would prefer a shorter style this time. Still undecided as to what style I would like. A good hairdresser may be able to help.
