Is there anything better than a trip the hairdresser? It’s a few hours of total bliss. You get to relax, read a mag, sip on tea, and be primped, pampered and doted on by a team of professionals. You then return to the real world – with head-turningly better hair.
And that’s precisely what went down last Friday. After an afternoon of living in pampered paradise at the Barney Martin Salon in Surry Hills, I had the absolute pleasure of chatting to the man himself, Pantene Ambassador and Hair Expert, Barney Martin – and asking him the questions every girl desperately wants answers to…
Q. What hair products are essential for every woman?
A treatment! I recommend my clients incorporate a treatment into their hair care regimen once a week. The Pantene Pro-V 3 Minute Miracle treatment is great as it works to instantly repair and protect against extreme damage caused by styling, colouring and environmental stress. The treatment re-hydrates hair, adds moisture and seals the cuticle to make the hair shinier.
Q. What haircuts are you loving at the moment, and what do you predict will be big in the future?
Bobs or lobs. Everyone has been coming into the salon and chopping their hair off! I predict these cuts are here to stay as they’re so classic, and easy to maintain and style.
bh tip: Barney also predicts there’ll be a resurgence of long locks soon, so all you long-haired lasses – sit tight!
Q. What’s the one hairstyle every woman should learn how to do?
How to blow-dry! I still have clients come in and ask me about the best way to blow-dry their hair. Start by towel-drying the hair and use a large paddle brush to blow-dry the hair in sections. You want most of the volume on the crown, so you should focus the air and heat there and always remember to blow-dry in the direction of the cuticle to help seal it. Using a large paddle brush instead of a round brush is better as it keeps hair smooth and doesn’t stretch the hair follicles. Complete the look with a light-hold hairspray to maintain volume.
Q. Do you think older women can embrace hair trends, or should they stick with timeless looks?
Yes, older women can embrace hair trends but it’s important to take the shape of your face and your skin tone into consideration, as these can change as you get older. A suitable colour and cut can make all the difference, so it’s best to speak to your colourist/hairdresser about this as they’ll be able to give you their professional opinion as to what looks are more appropriate for you.
Q. In your opinion, what is the biggest hair sin?
Rigorous brushing and using high-heat tools! Both habits can damage your hair cuticles, which can also lead to thinning hair. Always use a heat protectant product before using hot tools on your hair.
bh recommends: TRESemme Keratin Smooth Heat Protection Shine Spray.
Q. What are your top tips for keeping blonde hair strong and healthy?
Blonde hair may go brassy due to colour fading. A clarifying shampoo can help to remove product build-up, giving your hair a fresh start and a healthy shine.
bh reccommends: Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo
Q. Do you have any time-saving tricks for styling?
Leave-in treatments are great for improving the condition of your hair overnight without having to really do anything. Something like the Pantene Pro-V Ultimate 10 BB Crème is the ultimate 10-in-1 multi-tasking treatment that moisturises, detangles, de-frizzes and more. Leave it in overnight and when you wake up the next morning, your hair will feel incredibly soft.
