Is urine therapy the secret to a flawless complexion?

Last week was all about the silkworm cocoon facial, but now urine therapy has stolen the spotlight as the latest bizarre skin treatment.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, UK medical research writer Martha Christy said it can be applied topically to treat eczema, psoriasis and fungal infections.

According to Christy, thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, it can also be used to treat skin congestion and pimples. Controversially, the expert’s even suggested using it an eye and ear drop!

Urine therapy – or urotherapy – has roots in ancient Egypt, China and India – so it’s no new thang. To support her pro-pee argument, Christy cited women who took urine baths in eighteenth century France (although from what I recall from year nine history, personal hygiene wasn’t exactly stellar in those days). ”¨

To apply, she and other experts recommend putting it in your face cream. Supposedly, it’ll leave your skin feeling extra soft.

On one hand, I can see the appeal. After all, it won’t cost you a thing (your pee comes free)!

But thankfully for sceptics (including myself), many specialists aren’t so supportive of the treatment, saying there isn’t any real benefit apart from the five per cent nutrients urine contains – the rest is water.”¨

I’ll be sticking to nutritionist Shona Wilkinson’s suggestion to down “a glass of water and either a healthy meal or a multi vitamin and mineral tablet”, to boost my general health – and enhance my skin along the way.

Would you put urine on your face? What other bizarre skin treatments have you tried?
