Ultraceuticals skin challenge – 30 day progress report: Uneven skin-tone

I guess the first time I really thought about my skin was a few months ago when I was speaking with a lady at work who is close to 50. We were discussing what her skin treatment is and comparing it to mine, or lack thereof. Her skin was so smooth and soft to touch and when I compared [it to] my own, mine was really rough – [it] definitely didn’t feel like I was 20 years younger! It was at this moment that I realised that perhaps taking care of my skin would be a good idea. I had the odd facial, however I always found these were expensive and because I would have the treatments so far apart, there was little I could feel it doing. This trial has allowed me to really make an effort with my skin and I can tell you that this has definitely been worth the while – even after only a month! Looking at it now, the concerns I have had with my skin are large pores, congestion (but no acne), fine lines, redness, and uneven skin tone.

I was pretty excited to be using the Ultraceuticals products because it gave me the opportunity to get into a rigid skin care regimen that I wasn’t able to get into prior to this trial. I was started out on a routine morning and evening. In the morning, I used the Gel Cleanser, Even Skintone Serum (every second day) and sunscreen. In the evening, I used the cleanser and moisturiser. Every two weeks, I would go into the salon for a catch up with the skin technician and would have a treatment. What I was hoping for was some change over the period of the first month – however I wasn’t expecting too much change as it can take some time for things to happen. I have been so pleasantly surprised!

The at-home product is really easy to use and the routine is simple. As someone who hasn’t been in a routine before I’m surprised at how easy it was, and because of the speed of the results, it’s been easy to keep using it. My skin hasn’t had any adverse reactions to the at-home products and I’ve already seen some good results.

In terms of the clinic treatments these have been much more potent and I have seen some dramatic changes to my skin off the back of these. [During] the first consultation, I had an even skin tone treatment and afterwards my skin was quite pink – I could feel that something was working. Over the following days I had some patchy flaking, but not too much to worry about.

The second treatment two weeks later and the last treatment I had on day 30 of the trial were both the Vitamin A Peel (A-Zyme Peel). These peels are fantastic and I guarantee that I can see the results, however I did have some longer downtime with these. Day one was fine with no changes to my skin. Day two, however, I was able to start peeling skin from my face as I looked like a snake shedding its skin. This would last for a couple of days and by day four I had fresh, plump skin coming through that was really radiant. I know that some people would have a problem with the face peeling – and believe me I had people asking if I was okay – but I can’t speak highly enough of this treatment. My skin feels much fresher!

Overall the process has been really great and I’m looking forward to the changes to the routine in the coming months. I’ve been so incredibly happy with the results so far. I can’t believe how much difference it has made. People are actually stopping me and saying how great my skin is looking and asking what I’m doing. In terms of what were my concerns with my skin, the changes that I have seen are detailed below:

Large pores: They have begun to shrink – particularly around my nose and cheeks where they were most prominent.

Congestion: My skin is much clearer. I still have some congestion around my T-zone but this is definitely not as congested as four weeks ago before the treatment.

Fine lines: My skin feels much fuller and plumper, I would argue that it is looking younger. The lines that I felt I had definitely aren’t as prominent.

Redness: The treatments have definitely worked on the redness. It hasn’t helped that it’s summer and I’ve been out in the sun which means that I haven’t given it a great chance to work. In saying that, there are definitely some changes I can see that show it’s moving in the right direction.

Uneven skin tone: I’ve got quite a few freckles and these have begun to be less prominent with these treatments. My skin tone is looking much brighter and much more even as a whole.

My hope for what the products would do for my skin was to address all of my skin concerns. I hoped for a more even skin tone, softening and reduction of redness and pitting of acne scars on my cheeks, shrink enlarged pores on my nose and surrounding areas, smooth out any fine lines and eliminate peeling and flaking on my nose and around my mouth.

Initially, tiny bumps started appearing between my brows and near my nose but as my therapist explained, my skin was adjusting to the active ingredients in the products. In three weeks time, the bumps cleared up and I haven’t had any new bumps since. I haven’t had any other reaction to the products.

The products are easy to use, and the different shapes and design of the product packaging (tubes, dropper bottle, and cylindrical shaped bottle) makes it easy to recognise which products to use when and in which order. The instructions provided by my therapist and what is written on the packaging are easy to follow and remember.

The in-clinic treatments help the at-home products penetrate the skin faster. My skin is usually red and feels mildly raw in the first 24 to 48 hours post-treatment, but this quickly subsides. As per the therapist instructions, I’ve been avoiding products with active ingredients in them for a few days post in-clinic treatments, and I only use cleanser and basic moisturiser post in-clinic treatments. There is slight peeling after the redness subsides, but it’s not so much that I have to avoid going out. I always wear a high SPF right after my treatment to avoid sensitivity caused by the sun.

My skin appears softer, smoother, and more even-toned. The pitted scars appear softer and there is a reduction in redness around the scars. The enlarged pores on [the front of] my nose seem to have shrunk a bit; the pores on the sides of my nose have softened a bit but haven’t shrunk yet. I haven’t seen any peeling or flaking on my nose or mouth area since commencing with the 90 [Day] Challenge (apart from the post in-clinic treatment peeling).
