But when the temperature rises, we've forgotten about the skin problems that tag along with hot, humid weather. No need to struggle with sweat rash or sunburn! Q How do I prevent a breakout from sweat?
There are two important factors to consider. “Firstly if you know you will be in an environment or partaking in an activity where you will sweat, be cautious of using heavy products like foundation, zinc SPF and rich moisturiser,” says Anna. “Secondly, make it a priority to cleanse your skin thoroughly every morning and night by double cleansing.” To prevent a sweat breakout, apply a clarifying charcoal or clay mask at least once a week.
Q How do I prevent a breakout from sunscreen?
“It is rare for people to breakout from sunscreen, but if it does happen to you, it can be a trial an error situation,” explains Anna. “If your breakout is more pustular, trying using a physical blocker sunscreen such as Titanium Dioxide.”
Q What routine or products can I use to soothe red, irritated skin from the heat?
“I love using a spray toner from a sensitive skin range,” says Anna. “I use it to cool and calm my skin throughout the day and night. Plus they can be used over makeup so you can spritz all day long.”
When your skin’s irritated and hot, try to avoid stimulants like alcohol, hot showers and caffeine. “If you want to cool your skin down, do it in stages so you don't create an adverse skin reaction,” explains Anna. “When you sweat you lose a lot of water, and the skin is the last organ to receive any moisture - so make sure you drink plenty of H20 to protect your body from the heat.”
Q What routine or products can I use to soothe sunburnt skin?
“If your skin is sunburnt, the investment in post sun products are worth their weight in gold,” says Anna. “They not only cool and de-sensitize your skin, but help to kick off the healing process.” If you are severely burnt, make sure you seek medical advice from a GP.
“While your skin is healing from sunburn, avoid all active ingredients including AHAs and retinol, exfoliating and oils so you don’t irritate the skin any further,” explains Anna. “Once the pain of the burn has subsided, help boost the healing process by applying a hydrating mask.”
Q How can I prevent pigmentation from happening?
“SPFs don’t stop melanin production but they do significantly slow it down,” says Anna. “Skin brightening products can also slow and breakdown pigmentation. But always make sure when you’re out in the sun, you’re wearing a hat, SPF, sunglasses and a tightly woven shirt to help protect your skin from the sun.”
Q How can I reduce pigmentation on my face?
“Brightening products that contain MAP (magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) are good at reducing pigmentation,” says Anna. “Otherwise you can invest in LED, IPL or peels, post summer, to help reduce the appearance of pigmentation.”
