10 commandments for healthy skin

We’re all guilty of having bad beauty habits, but when you don’t take proper care of your skin, it shows in the form of pimples, dullness or wrinkles.

Let’s change that! Whether you’re in need of a complete skin care overhaul or simply want to create better habits, we’ve broken down how to get gorgeous, glowing skin

Commandment #1: Thou shalt cleanse religiously.

Clean skin is healthy skin, so don’t skip the most vital step in your skin care routine: cleansing. In the morning and night. Let the steam from your shower open up your pores for a couple of minutes before cleansing for a deeper, more thorough clean.

Commandment #2: Thou shalt use a serum, morning and night.

If you don’t already use a nourishing and antioxidant-rich serum daily, then hop to it! Think of it as a multi-vitamin for your skin – it’ll give your complexion an instant (and concentrated) dose of skin-loving ingredients.

Commandment #3: Thou shalt manage moisture.

To keep skin plump, supple and glowing, keep it nice and hydrated. After cleansing and applying a serum, lock in moisture and seal in the goodness of your serum with a creamy, hydrating moisturiser.

Commandment #4: Thou shalt wear SPF every day.

When you ditch SPF, you basically give the sun free reign to damage your skin – think pigmentation, dark spots, lines and wrinkles. No, thanks! Give your skin the protection it needs with a day cream containing SPF sun protection.

Commandment #5: Thou shalt exfoliate weekly.

Your skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells, so to prevent them from clogging your pores and leaving you with dry, flaky patches, exfoliate once or twice a week. After cleansing, simply massage a dollop of exfoliator in circular motions over your face and rinse off for renewed and glowing skin.

Commandment #6: Thou shalt not pop, pick or squeeze.

Unless you’re totally fine with scarring your skin and spreading pimple-causing germs, keep your fingers well away from your face! Treat blemishes the right way by dabbing a spot treatment onto pimples with clean fingers.

Commandment #7: Thou shalt hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

Along with moisturising, it’s essential to keep your skin hydrated and nourished from the inside out. Guzzle water as often as you can to plump and replenish your skin cells, and give your complexion that healthy glow we all know and love.

Commandment #8: Thou shalt switch it up with the seasons.

Just like you adapt your wardrobe to the seasons, your skin care needs to adjust to the warmer and cooler months, too. In summer, nix oil with a light gel moisturiser, and swap it for a heavier, more nourishing cream during the winter months.

Commandment #9: Thou shalt eat clean, healthy foods.

If you’re healthy on the inside, then you’ll sport clearer skin and a luminous glow on the outside. It’s just a fact. Nourish your skin from within by loading your diet with skin-loving foods like salmon, almonds, tomatoes and leafy greens.

Commandment #10: Thou shalt sweat it out.

There’s no better way to detox your skin than with exercise. Working up a sweat is amazing for increasing blood flow to your skin (so learn to love your flushed, face!), which helps your skin to naturally glow. Also, sweating gives your pores the chance to purge blocked-up dirt and impurities for a cleaner complexion – just remember to take off your make-up before hitting the treadmill!
