The Unexpected Skin Care Step That Will Stop Your Concealer From Caking

Nothing can expose a dehydrated face quite like a thick and creamy concealer. Even the best concealers for dry skin can struggle to disguise flakey under eyes. More often than not, in an attempt to brighten dark circles, dry skin types wind up with cakey-looking concealer that only draws further attention to dry patches.

However, before you begin skipping this step altogether, we urge you to take note of a nifty tip shared by celebrity makeup artist Nam Vo. A tip she believes will fix caking concealer for good. So what’s the magic potion? Toner.

The queen of the #DewyDumplings hashtag herself spoke to Well and Good about her one-step trick “to set your skin up for success”. And it all comes down to incorporating an extra (but incredibly simple) step into your regimen. “Toning your skin before applying concealer is the best method to help make your makeup [stay] dewy,” she said.

And the rationale behind this? Well, according to Nam, a good quality toner works to “cleanse impurities and remove any dead skin cells.” And instead of dry, flakey under eyes, you’ll be left with “baby-soft skin” that lays a smooth base for the concealer to sit comfortably while appearing natural and dewy. Take it one step further and pair your toner with a hydrating eye cream or moisturiser and you can expect your dewy skin to move in on a more permanent basis.

  1. If you are not a dry skin type, you do not understand dry skin woes. Hydrating toner is a must-have. Toner is not going to be only thing that will help you prep that undereye area. You need a primer of some sort before you can apply concealer.
