If I spend any more time eyeing the fine print on all the skincare that crosses my desk, it’s possible that I’ll go cross-eyed. I realise I’m outing myself as a total beauty geek here, but I actually get a kick out of dissecting details like what peptides are doing in a serum and why I should be impressed that marine algae is in my moisturiser. I’m all about what’s on the inside.

But I also realise I’ve been missing half the point…  

When it comes to getting as gorgeous as possible, what’s on the outside counts for a whole lot too. 

The thing about some of the most powerful skincare ingredients we’ve got is that they’re vulnerable. Like tough guys who tear up pathetically during Steel Magnolias, expose their weak spots and they crumble beyond recognition.

Take antioxidants, for instance. Ruthless on skin-ravaging free radicals, vitamins E, A and superhero C are seriously destabilised or destroyed by exposure to light and air. And the invisible bacteria on your fingertips can be contaminating kryptonite to many an ingredient’s skin-saving power.

Your skincare’s best defence: the dark side – and spatulas. Choosing opaque, light-proof bottles and keeping your lotions and potions cool and out of the sun will help keep antioxidants alive, and, to avoid oxygen exposure, pumps are the best bet. Keeping your mitts out of precious pots by using applicators is also crucial and remembering to replace caps quick smart can preserve your product’s potency too.

Think of it as a skincare protection plan, guarding your most gorgeous ingredients from the worst of the big, bright world and, without which, whatever you spend on skincare could become a wasted investment. That’s what really counts, right? Even if you’re not a complete skincare geek. Who’s going cross-eyed…
