Skin care basics every man needs to know
If the men in your life are anything like mine, skin care is the last thing on their radar. Most of them wouldn't know a toner from an exfoliator, and don’t even bother asking them what a serum is (if they do know – kudos to them!).
My boyfriend Spencer is a prime example of skin care ignorance. I once found him using a moisturiser as a cleanser – true story!
But regardless of whether you're male or female, skin is skin and needs to be looked after. So we've put together the basic steps to get your bloke clued up, with opinions from an actual guy. Yep, I managed to convince Spencer to trial a full skin care routine (it was also a handy way of schooling him).
Take a look at what he thought below and maybe leave this article open on your computer if your man needs a nudge in the right direction...
Cleanser – what is it and how do you use it?
Using a cleanser is the first step to any skin care routine. It cleans away dirt, oil and grime that has built up on the face throughout the day. Think of it as a body wash, but for your face.
Ideally use a cleanser after showering. The steam will have opened up your pores, which helps the cleanser do its job more effectively.
“I have to admit I don’t regularly cleanse my skin. However, after putting L'Oréal Paris Men Expert Pure Power Charcoal Wash to the test, I have really been liking it. It’s easy to use and I like the black charcoal formulation. My skin feels clean but not tight afterwards.”

Toner – what is it and how do you use it?
A toner is used after cleansing to rehydrate the skin and can help minimise concerns such as breakouts and fine lines. Toners usually come in the form of a spray or lotion, and sometimes even as liquid exfoliants. These help clear skin like a beaded exfoliating scrub would.
To use, simply spritz all over or apply to a cotton pad and wipe over the entire face after cleansing. Make sure you allow it to absorb into the skin.
“I didn’t really know what a toner was, but I’ve always liked [it] when Aja gives me a spritz of hers. I have been really enjoying the La Roche-Posay Serozinc spray. It helps to mattify my oily skin and is a nice way to refresh my skin.”

Serum – what is it and how do you use it?
From anti-ageing, hydrating, calming or spot treating, there is a wide range of serums on the market that treat individual skin concerns.
To apply, follow your toner with your serum of choice. Serum usually comes in the form of an oil or gel, and all you need to do is put a few drops in your palm and massage over the face.
“My skin is prone to dark spots so I was keen to give the Clinique For Men Dark Spot Corrector a go. It was easy to apply before bed and after a few weeks I have definitely noticed a difference in the discoloured areas on my face.”

Moisturiser – what is it and how do you use it?
Moisturising your face every day and night is extremely important for hydrating the skin – it’s like having a big glass of water.
In the mornings apply a moisturiser with SPF, so your skin is protected from the sun’s harsh rays and you don’t have to use two separate products.
At night, opt for a moisturiser without SPF as it isn’t needed throughout sleep and may break some skin types out. Don’t shy away from a heavier cream at night either, as this is when the skin regenerates itself. Guys need their beauty sleep too!
Apply moisturiser all over your face and neck and rub it in until it’s no longer visible.
“I really like using a moisturiser that already has SPF sunscreen in it because I won’t use two products when I can just use one. Creightons Groomed SPF 15 Moisture Cream is great for that. It has a nice soft formulation with cocoa butter and makes my skin feel hydrated all day.”

So what were Spencer’s overall thoughts of his new regimen?
“I have never used this many skin care products before, but I have really seen a difference in my skin over the last few weeks trialling them. I didn’t use these [exact] steps because I didn’t understand what each product was for, but [using the products] has helped me actually see the benefits and results. I will definitely try to keep my skin care routine going – hopefully I don’t fall off the bandwagon!”
