Member reviews: Dermalogica Face Mapping
Have you always ‘self-diagnosed’ your skin concerns and bought products that you think will help improve it, only to be disappointed when your skin doesn’t improve (or even gets worse)?
Well, hold it right there. In order to truly understand your skin and treat it properly, your best bet is to get an expert opinion. And thankfully, there is a service that won’t cost a thing or take up loads of your time. It’s called the Dermalogica Face Mapping Skin Analysis, and we thought it was time it put it to the test.
Recently, twenty lucky beautyheaven members were invited to Dermalogica headquarters in Sydney to have their skin Face Mapped by Dermalogica experts to get a deeper insight into their skin issues and the best way to treat them.
So, how does Face Mapping work exactly? Firstly, the Dermalogica experts asked each of our members about their lifestyle, general health issues, exfoliation history, and sun tolerance, and then used a technique unique to Dermalogica to perform a visual examination of the skin. This involved touching the skin, and then ‘reading’ the skin using the old tradition of Chinese Facial Diagnosis to find indications of internal organ health.
The expert then referred to the Dermalogica Face Map to divide their skin into 14 zones. For each zone, the Expert was able to detect concerns like breakouts, redness, dehydration and pigmentation. They also touched the skin to find ‘hot spots’ that could indicate things like stress, oiliness or dryness, and congestion. As you can see, this service involves more than a facialist simply looking at your skin – it’s a complete skin analysis.
At the event, our members we’re also treated to a range of other Dermalogica treatments, including a skin analysis with a black light machine, which looks deep within the skin, and hand massages. Each member also walked away with a goodie bag of the products professionally prescribed for their skin during their Face Mapping session.
Here’s what some of the beautyheaven guests had to say about their Dermalogica Face Mapping Skin Analysis and how it’s benefited their skin so far:
“During the process, my face was broken down into 14 sections. While I thought my skin was normal to dry, I learned that certain sections were actually dehydrated and I need to ensure I stay hydrated. I asked a number of questions that the consultant was happy answer and she gave me great advice on how to take care of my skin, including how to properly use a few recommended Dermalogica products. To date I have been loving the recommended products.” - CarrieDee
“For anyone who invests in skin care products, [Dermalogica Face Mapping] should definitely be a must! All it takes is a few minutes of your time, but can provide you with a wealth of knowledge about your own skin that you may not necessarily realise without hours of Internet research (like myself). These consultants are professionally trained and are passionate about skin.” – Huyen
“I've been using the recommended products for the past week and my skin feels dramatically different, I told my partner about this event and he is really keen to get his skin mapped too!” – lilys775
“I love this accurate personalised approach to skincare. All too often the sheer range of skin care products available can be overwhelming, and due to our lack of expert knowledge, we don't always choose the most appropriate products for our skin ourselves. This process is an educated (and educating) one and removes all the guess work of what products would be best for us. We obviously all have different skin care needs and this process allows the Dermalogica experts to prescribe a personalised skin care regimen specifically for our own individualised needs.”- Ingrid82

What a great idea. I spent years not looking after my skin and I have spoken with people about what skincare to use and have been recommended but to have someone properly assess my skin and address what actually need sound perfect.

Been looking at having this done at one of the local salons in town that sells dermalogica. It would be interesting to know what is going on that I can’t see

I had my face mapped multiple times (timing quite close to each other) and depending on the person doing it I got different results. Unreliable, although I like the products

Best to go to a dermatologist as you get the same thing (but more qualified) and unbiased towards pushing products, I am always wary of brands doing this, I'd rather an unbiased examination

I would like to see what my face looks like under the Dermalogica skin scanner, but it could be depressing. I had someone check my face under a UV light twenty years ago and I was horrified, so I can only imagine what my face would look like today.

Those light things could be scary, tell you you have terrible skin and not much can be done

You would think so just by looking at it, but when you get down to the nitty gritty, it's not. Particularly when you have an experienced therapist taking you through the process. They speak to you about the various zones on your face, why which zone is producing more oil in comparison to another, why one zone may be susceptible to breakouts, and how a few simple changes in your skin care routine can change the entire outcome.
The first time I did it I walked away with a bunch of samples, and ended up going back for a facial. I ended up buying the Special Cleansing Gel, the Microfoliant and one of the moisturisers. Brilliant products.
Check it out. Make sure they do have the lightbox thingie (I can't remember what it's called) but it will highlight any pigmentation or scarring, and any hidden areas of concern the naked eye can't see. If anything, you may walk away having learned something new!
TUD x

I called endota spa in point cook to book aa face mapping session and they said that they would do a thorough job with a facial (a minimum of 1/2 hour) where they would remove all the makeup, cleanse my face and be able to do a close up inspection. Being a new mum, I don't have a lot of time to spare for a facial (though I would love to do so) and only wanted to get the face mapping done. To that, I was told to just show up at reception and someone should be able to help me out. Is this the normal protocol? Do they just do a quick look at your face and recommend products based on it?

Face mapping is interesting. I would love to try it. My biggest concern is pigmentation. I have finally found a couple products that have faded it significantly, but I still have a couple stubborn spots.
