Why your oily skin needs a face oil

If you have combination or oily skin, using a face oil may seem counterintuitive. Chances are, you’re more likely to search for the best toner for oily skin, or mattifying products to help hide your skin’s sheen.

But while these traditional skin remedies may help reduce the oil-factor in the short-term, there’s a good chance your oily skin concerns will still persist. This is where face oil can make a real difference.

Contrary to what you may believe, the right face oil won’t increase your skin’s oil production, in fact it can help to regulate it  for a much healthier complexion. Here’s everything you need to know about face oil for your combination or oily skin…

Why is my skin so oily?

Combination or oily skin often gets a bad rap, but in order to stay soft and supple, your skin needs to produce a certain amount of oil naturally. However, if you have very oily skin (to the point where you’re getting excess shine and greasiness, congestion and even breakouts) this means your skin is producing excess oil. But why? Well, it’s often because your skin’s oil-water balance is out of whack.

“The most common mistake people with oily or combination skin make is using a harsh skin care routine,” says Trilogy beauty expert Corinne Morley. The fact is that if you continuously strip away your skin’s natural oil with heavy duty cleansing products, your skin’s protective barrier will be compromised. This in turn aggravates your skin’s sebaceous glands, which will overcompensate by producing excessive amounts of oil in an effort to rehydrate and protect your skin.

The main message to take away? In order to treat your oily skin, you need to support (not strip away) your skin’s oil content.

The myth: Face oils make oily skin worse

Not sure how to treat oily skin? As Corrine explains, “The right balance and blend of natural oils in your skin care regimen ” could be the key. A face oil can actually help to prevent your skin from producing excess oil by improving your skin’s hydration level, and stopping your sebaceous glands from going into overdrive.

For best results, those with a combination or oily skin type should look for a face oil that is formulated especially for them. According to Corinne, a lighter face oil formulated with pure plant oils is best. Not only do pure plant oils deliver high-concentrations of active ingredients to your skin, “they also have a finer molecular structure than mineral oils,” she says, which means “they are similar in design to our own natural skin oil (sebum).” They are therefore readily accepted and absorbed by the skin, without clogging pores or disrupting normal, healthy skin cell function.

One such natural face oil that is ideal for combination or oily skin types is Trilogy Rosehip Oil Light Blend. Designed with a lighter formula than the original Trilogy Certified Organic Rosehip Oil, it is formulated to be quickly and easily absorbed, while still being deeply nourishing.

Formulated with no added fragrances or preservatives, Trilogy Rosehip Oil Light Blend contains a mixture of certified organic seed oils designed to boost hydration and help to regulate the skin’s own oil production. The blend includes certified organic rosehip oil, which has been shown to hydrate, repair and strengthen skin, while also providing a protective, yet invisible barrier which helps to prevent moisture loss. As Corrine explains, it’s all because “Rosehip oil is super-rich in essential fatty acids (omegas 3 and 6) and fatty acids (omega 9), which are intensely nourishing and great for helping to repair the skin’s natural barrier.”

Trilogy Rosehip Oil Light Blend also contains nourishing jojoba seed oil to further protect the skin from drying out, and linoleic acid-rich grapeseed oil, which has been shown to help balance the skin’s natural oil output. For best results, apply three drops twice a day, and follow with a lightweight moisturising lotion such as Trilogy Balancing Face Lotion, to help lock in the hydrating benefits of the oil.

So, there you have it. Contrary to what you may have heard, a face oil could be one of the most effective oily skin remedies there is!
