Get great skin on a budget

Getting perfectly clear, healthy-looking skin doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, there are loads of skin care buys out there that can perform just as well as their more expensive counterparts at a fraction of the cost. And, there are even some free (music to your ears?!) tricks and DIY treatments that will work wonders on improving your complexion.
Ready to find out how to get better skin on a budget? Here’s how…
RESIST THE URGE TO SPLURGE
At bh, we’re all for spoiling yourself with expensive beauty products because, really, who can resist a luxe buy every now and then?! But, we also know that there are loads of effective and very affordable skin care buys out there too that are totally worth every cent.
For example, cult favourite Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is ideal for all skin types and comes in at only $7.60. Craving a softer complexion? With it's classic NIVEA creme scent, NIVEA Creme Care Cleansing Cream Wash will leave your skin feeling soft and cared for, for less than a tenner. We also love the budget-friendly L’Oreal Paris Skin Perfection Refreshing Cleansing Wipes, for an instantly cleansed and refreshed complexion, for only $6.95.
DOUBLE DUTY BEAUTY
Love the look of gorgeous, glowing skin? You don’t have to break the bank with an expensive illuminator. Pop a dollop of your regular facial moisturiser in the palm of your hand and add a couple of drops of any facial oil and a sprinkle of bronzing powder. Mix it together, smooth it over your complexion and you’ve got yourself a brighter, luminous and more hydrated complexion in one simple step.
bh loves: Dove Protective Day Cream SPF 15 ($13.15), Thursday Plantation Nurture Oil ($13.50), Models Prefer Bronzer ($10.99)

PLAY MIX AND MATCH
If you find that you go through your skin care products at lightening-fast speed, try alternating your beauty buys with some DIY treatments every now and then. For example, use your fave body exfoliator one week, then give your body a scrub with a homemade oat and brown sugar scrub the following week. Mix together some ground oats with brown sugar and lemon juice until you have a paste, massage it over your bod, and then rinse off with warm water to reveal smoother, glowing skin. Cheap and effective!
SAVE YOUR MIND AND BODY
Stress not only takes a toll on your mental health – your body and skin can be impacted too. Your complexion can become sallow, dry and can even break out, so it’s vital that you try your best to take care of your skin during stressful times. Some of the best – and completely free – ways to combat stress are exercising, meditating, taking some ‘me’ time, or simply having some time out to rest and read a book. Try to give your skin a little bit of pampering too with a facial mask for stressed out skin, and take a warm shower using a body wash that contains stress-relieving fragrances like lavender, chamomile or ylang ylang. You’ll be feeling and looking back to normal in no time!
We love these affordable mind and body buys: Aveeno Stress Relief Body Wash ($9.99), Skinvitals G-Energise with Ginseng + Ginko Biloba ($9.99 for three sachets)

The Skin Perfection Wipes from Loreal are the only things here I am thinking would be worth trying. Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser is a product I have used on and off for many years when my skin has bouts of sensitivity.

I must admit I have gone through my fair share of trialing product s and just got tired of wasting my money. I am yet to find amazing products that fix everything but for now my products keep my skin at bay

Whilst i am not about spending a fortune on skincare ( i do draw the line though at any "no name" supermarket stuff, anything from some $2 shop sort of place or any "grey imports" ),i do believe that with some things, you really do get what you pay for (although, that doesn't have to be a $300 moisturiser). A great cleanser, that is super cheap (around $20) and works a treat is Mario Badescu Glycolic foaming cleanser. It is a big bottle, and a tiny amount is all you need.If you tone, simple Witch Hazel from Woolies works wonders...and is super gentle. For serious skincare (and i mean SERIOUS),get to a GP and ask for a script for Stieva-A Cream. It is pure retinol (yep, the magic stuff found in MUCH lesser quantities in a lot of anti-ageing creams) and is used mainly to treat severe acne.A side effect noticed by those who did use it for that, was that their skin became softer, less lined, dark spots vanished and their skin had a glow that is unattainable with anything less.....so started the use of this for ageing skin.It is something you have to work up to using every day (it is highly effective, but it is a bit, shall we say, "uncomfortable" at first.Start with a low dose, once a week, then work up after a month). The great thing about this cream? It is less than $25 to buy...and lasts for ages (do NOT use any other retinol products with it,DO NOT use when pregnant or when you are thinking about it and sunscreen..SPF 50,is an absolute MUST WEAR when using it).Use this at night, and for the day ? a great Vit C serum is the last word in anti ageing / blemish prone / lack lustre skincare (a highly sought after one is Timeless 20% Vitamin C Serum + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid 1.It is under $30).So all up,less than $80 and you have a skincare arsenal that works like magic,is highly available and is scientifically proven to give great skin (unlike those aforementioned $300 products that just smell nice and come nicely wrapped).

True you can buy the basic ingredients in most expensive skin care products at the pharmacy for much less, and it's more potent - guess most people don't trust themselves or don't have the time to research it but it is so worth it

I did not try any of these...did use Aveeno when younger. Best budget stuff for me? And ones that do not contain chemical fillers to make it so cheap? DIY homemade stuff...

Some good cheap products here, though I still like good old sorbolene as a cleanser, moisturiser, makeup remover and shower wash/moisturiser.

I did try sorbolene too ages ago. It dries my skin out on the long term! Since then I have noticed that any cream (for face too) that is loaded with glycerin does that.

When it comes to skin/body care, I think the budget items are the way to go. There are so many affordable and great skincare items on the market. I love Aveeno's body lotions and creams. I'm really keen to try their latest Sheer variant.

I usually use budget products (under $10) for skin and hair and have always found them to be great (mostly). If I splurge I will usually do it when the products are on sale. In the last year I decided to spend a bit more on skin care and hair care - just a few products here and there - and have to say I have been mostly disappointed - but perhaps that is just the cheapskate in me.

I can tell you that a house full of chocolate is not brilliant for my skin ;-) I think I'm more dehydrated than I realise, and so I need to rely heavily on my skin care.
I think it's important to try different products until you find one that works best for you.
Your skin will change as you age too, so you may need to change products every 5 or ten years (or more often, depending on lifestyle and other factors).
It's even better when the product that works best for you doesn't cost you and arm and a leg :)

I've started using some cheaper skin care products (to save for my holiday) but I find my skin hasn't been anywhere near as good since I started it. They are great, but sometimes you do get what you pay for. Though I am a skincare fanatic haha

I've recently started using the Cetaphil cleanser for the first time, and can see why it's such a hyped product. Love it.

I'd love to see more articles about creating your own beauty, like making cleansing wipes or something cool like that!
