Madonna’s make-up artist’s top tips and tricks

Ever wondered about how the world’s biggest superstars prep for the red carpet? Well, we chatted to Madonna’s make-up artist of 12 years (yes, 12!) and beauty expert, Gina Brooke, about how the 57-year-old performer keeps her skin glowing, as well as her top tips and tricks, and the products she simply can’t live without…

What are your favourite make-up products and why?

Shu Uemura eyelash curler – to elongate lashes and create the appearance of a wider eye.

RCMA concealer (Shinto palette) – to conceal any imperfections in the skin, contour bone structure and create the illusion of flawless skin.

What is your top skin care product?

I consider the Intraceuticals Hydration Gel like a tall glass of water for your skin. It contains a medium-weight of hyaluronic acid which provides a reservoir of anti-ageing nutrients to the skin.

What’s your number one skin care tip for someone who wears make-up every day?

Beautiful make-up must always begin with hydrated skin.

Do you have any anti-ageing skin care advice?

It’s never too early to care for and protect your skin. I recommend young women and men to care for their skin, not only to create a beautiful complexion, but as a preventative. Always use sunblock!

What products do you use to help Madonna’s make-up stay put through a show?

Prepping the skin and using a primer are key to long-lasting make-up. I recommend using Perfect Base Corrector by Kiko Cosmetics – it evens out and mattifies the skin and ensures long-lasting make-up.

Have you made any drastic changes over the last 12 years to Madonna’s make-up look? Do you like to follow trends?

I never follow trends. I never quite understood why anyone would want to look like everyone else. I believe make-up is a tool to express one’s individuality. Madonna and I have collaborated on many different looks over the years and, yes, some were more drastic changes than others.

What is your go-to look for Madonna for the following events:

For a concert? Strong eyes and lots of lashes

For a press event? Luminous skin, defined bone structure

For an awards show? Flawless skin, a bold lip or eye
