The skin care brands founded and formulated by dermatologists

You expect a meal at a restaurant to be cooked by a chef and medicine to be formulated by scientists and medical experts, so skin care made by skin doctors sounds pretty standard, right?

Well, not necessarily. Some of our favourite brands are the brainchilds of celebrities, who have spent half their life in the makeup chair, or business savvy entrepeneurs who simply saw a gap in the market.

That’s not to say those brands aren’t remarkable and at least consult experts – because, they are (we’re huge fans of Glossier and Summer Fridays, just to name a few).

However, when facing chronic skin conditions, sometimes you just want a product that is guaranteed to go beyond pretty packaging and persuasive marketing. And with dermatologist-founded brands, you’re in pretty safe hands when it comes to wrinkle-fighting, anti-blemish, and all-round glowing skin.

Here are some of our favourites:

SkinCeuticals

SkinCeuticals was founded in 1997 by Sheldon Pinnell, M.D. and Russell Moon.

Known for his work with antioxidants, Dr. Pinnel’s vitamin C patent is still used in a lot of the products today. Since his passing in 2013, his legacy has lived on with the brand.

Murad

Murad was founded by Dr Howard Murad, who lives by the ethos of ‘skin care is healthcare’. As the author of 12 bestsellers and 19 patents in clinical skin care, Dr Murad’s products are created to target specific concerns such as acne and wrinkles, with the most effective ingredients available.

Dr. Dennis Gross

If you can’t make to the Dr. Dennis Gross practice in NYC, alongside your pals Zoë Kravitz and Selena Gomez, then you’ll have to settle for the next best thing. Luckily, the next best thing is pretty darn impressive.

The at-home line of dermatologist  Dr. Dennis Gross, features transformative peels, serums and creams to target varying issues from stressed to ageing skin.

bh recommends: Alpha Beta Extra Strength Daily Peels ($27, Mecca).

Lancer

Sofia Vergara and Kim Kardashian are among Dr. Lancer’s impressive celebrity clientelle, who all swear by the ‘The Lancer Method’.

Dr Harold Lancer is renowned for his work with acne treatment.

bh recommends: The Method Cleanse ($95, Myer).

Perricone MD

Dr. Nicholas V. Perricone is both a dermotologist and nutritionist, as well as best-selling author. He’s a long time devotee to reversing the effects of ageing, which he considers an ‘inflammatory disease’.

Perricone MD features science-based formulas, which are always at the forefront of new technology and deliver luminous skin time and time again.

bh recommends: Cold Plasma Plus Advanced Face Serum ($239, Mecca).

IT Cosmetics

Although not founded by a dermatolgist, founder Jamie Kern Lima, had both dermatologists and plastic surgeons heavily involved in the product development of It Cosmetics from day one, ensuring all products were clinically tested.

It was the first makeup brand to really have skin care at its core, and bring us total gems like the CC cream – but you should definitely try the skin care too!
