The popular beauty ingredient Jessica Alba claims is ‘unnecessary’

Starting out selling non-toxic nappies, Jessica Alba’s e-commerce site, The Honest Company has grown from strength to strength since expanding into the world of natural beauty.

Valued just shy of $1 billion dollars in 2017, the brand has successfully gained a mass and loyal following of people all eager to be kinder to the environment, their skin and quite frankly, get a little bit closer to that iconic Jessica Alba glow.

However, if you’re yet to try out any of the products on offer like the cult-favourite Hydrogel Cream, the Internet is busting with the next best thing: beauty tips from the non-toxic beauty founder herself.

And the latest pearl of wisdom? The popular ingredient that the mum-of-three believes we just do not need.

Speaking to Bustle, Alba revealed her “must-avoid ingredient in skin care” is *drum roll please*, fragrance. A regular on any sensitive-skin-types blacklist, Jessica suggests we could all benefit from avoiding perfumed formulas.

“I would say the number one thing I look out for is perfume and fragrance”, she said. “It’s just unnecessary, you don’t really need a synthetic fragrance in your skin care or makeup”.

In fact, when it comes to her skin care ethos, Jessica shared, “I really want to give to my face what a green juice gives to my body.”

So if you’re ready to walk away from the perfumed product life and treat your cheeks to a big ol’ glass of metaphorical green juice, here are our recommendations for some fragrance-free goodies: Eau Thermale Avène Extremely Gentle CleanserElizabeth Arden Eight Hour Skin ProtectantCeraVe Moisturizing LotionElucent Eye CreamSunSense Ultra SPF 50+

  1. Definitely agree with Jessica Alba that fragrance free Skincare Products are the best, I try to always get fragrance free body lotions and face creams.

In my earlier years I have learnt not to use fragrance Moisturisers even powders because I would end up in a rash.

This should also apply to Washing Detergents we buy because you don’t need a fragrance in the Detergent that can give you a rash.

  2. I know fragrance can be drying and irritating, but to me it’s a big part of the whole skin care experience. However, I do prefer natural oils as fragrance in skin care and not synthetics.

  3. I have sensitive skin but I also find that many products with wonderful scents are fine for my skin and sont cause me to have reactions. I love products with divine scents.

  4. As long as something doesn’t smell like roses or jasmine (my migraine triggers), I prefer something that smells nice. I’ve got tough skin that doesn’t react adversely to fragrances.

  5. What a legend she is for giving such a great tip.

It’s a very simple tip, but a very unnoticeable one as well.

There’s tonnes of fragrance in our makeup not just our skincare and can actually break us out a lot of the times without knowing

  6. Need vs want. I don’t need a lot of things, but I want a lot of things. I personally love fragrance, but I’ve seen the difference it makes opting for fragrance free with my kids. I learned my lesson with babies 3, 4 and 5 that switching to fragrance free wipes made diaper rash virtually non-existent.

I still use products with fragrance, but for my body lotion, I tend to prefer fragrance free and then wear the perfume of my choosing.

  7. I haven’t tried her products, but I will kind of agree with her on fragrance. I like to pop some on, but I’m not a fan of fragranced skincare for my face as my sensitive skin has reacted to products containing fragrance before. Bodycare however, I don’t mind wearing a scented body lotion or butter, provided my fussy skin doesn’t react to it.
