It’s happening. Summer’s on the way out, and as our tans fade and autumn approaches, chances are your sun-streaked hair needs a little TLC. With all that summer fun comes damage, and our strands are usually hit the hardest. Combine wind, sun and harsh UV rays with chlorine, salt water and air con, and it’s surprising we even have any hair left! Follow these tips to resuscitate your locks and gear up for a season of good hair days.
START WITH YOUR SCALP
A happy scalp is the prerequisite to healthy hair. If you’re dealing with dandruff, get rid of dryness and flakiness by adding a dash of tea tree oil to your shampoo once a week and massage in. The natural antiseptic helps to clear blocked hair follicles and eliminate impurities, meaning your hair can grow in peace. If you’ve got the opposite problem – an oily scalp – simply dab a cotton ball soaked with witch hazel onto your hairline and along your part, then rinse in cold water. And if hair thinning is keeping you up at night, go straight to the root of the issue: the scalp. A revitaliser will work wonders.

GIVE YOUR MANE SOME MOISTURESummer hair damage won’t fix itself, so give your parched, dehydrated locks a big drink of water with a nourishing hair mask. After shampooing, smooth on the product, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. The beneficial ingredients will penetrate deep into your damaged hair shafts, and help to restore, nourish and repair them. Phew!
PROTECT AND SERVE
Our hair takes a beating, and as much as we don’t like to admit it, we probably (okay, definitely) neglected to protect it on more than one occasion. Hey, we’re only human, but we promise to be better – starting with some crisis management! Get into the habit of priming your hair. It will make it smoother (cya, frizz!), easier to manage, and act as a base to secure styles for longer. But above all, a primer will make your post-summer hair look better. Cross our heart.

CUT YOUR LOSSES
Sun, salt, chlorine and some hair elastics can cause frayed, fried ends, and if left to their own devices, these split ends will continue to split up the hair follicle. A trim will make the world of difference to the state of your strands, so go on, call your hairdresser. And be sure to keep your new cut in check with products that’ll love your locks!
DETANGLE WITH CARE
It can be difficult to comb out less-than-lustrous locks without causing additional damage. Baby your stressed tresses, and use a wide-tooth comb to detangle, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots. Make this task even easier by applying a multi-tasking detangling product before you brush to get rid of unruly knots and add a dose of moisture and shine.
Shiny hair is a big indication of whether your strands are healthy or not, so spruce them up with a gloss treatment. To get the most out of your shine, pair the treatment with a nourishing oil and gently cleansing shampoo, and voila! Healthy, happy hair.

AMP UP YOUR COLOUR
Sun exposure is one of the biggest culprits of dull, brassy hair, especially if it’s colour-treated. Those sun-kissed streaks that onced glowed against your bronzed skin will soon wash out your paler complexion come autumn. Pick up the phone and dial the salon, now, because you’re going to need to update your colour with richer tones. Ensure your new hue stays put for longer by locking in a colour care formulated product and reap the (glossy) rewards.
