How much make-up is too much?

Bright eye shadow. Bold lips. Winged eyeliner. Fluttery false eye lashes. These glorious statement make-up looks most definitely belong on the red carpet, the runway and in the clubs, but in the schoolyard? Um, nope. They certainly do not.

But we at bh understand a teenager may still want to look adorable in the classroom, so we’ve gathered some top tips on what slap is suitable when you’re boarding the high school-bound bus five days a week…

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #1: pay attention to your skin
OK, so this isn’t exactly a ‘make-up’ tip, but if you want your skin to look good with make-up, you need to pay attention to what it looks like without make-up. Starting a good skin care regimen at an early age is always a smart idea, especially when those pimple-causing hormones start to kick in. Look for cleansers containing zit-fighting and skin-clearing salicylic acid, opt for lightweight moisturisers that won’t block your pores, and make an effort to keep your (grubby, germy) hands away from your blemishes. If this sounds too hard, use a product like Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Seal-to-Clear Gel, which helps heal spots while shielding your skin from outside bacteria. Love it.

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #2: keep your foundation sheer and luminous
Caked-on make-up is never a good look at any age, but it is a definite no-no in the schoolyard. If you need a little coverage to help even out your skin tone or cover spots, opt for a tinted moisturiser or a glowy, lightweight foundation. Aveeno Positively Radiant Tinted Moisturiser is cheap and cheerful, and contains an SPF 15, too.

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #3: embrace your freckles
Kids and teenagers tend to sport freckles, and while we’ve dished the dirt on how to embrace them here, it’s important for all youngsters to know they are seriously cute and shouldn’t be covered up. But, and this is a BIG but, SPF 30+ should be applied to the face on a daily bases to prevent unhealthy sun damage. Try: WOTNOT 30+ SPF Natural Sunscreen.

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #4: ditch the eye shadow
Yep, don’t even think about touching it. Instead, utilise the beauty powers of a brown or clear mascara and make your eyes pop in a natural way. They’ll open up your peepers, make you feel ‘done’ and keep the make-up police (your teachers!) happy. Oh, and if you’re a sporty chick opting for a brown hue, reach for a waterproof version. That way, no matter how much you sweat, you won’t end up with panda eyes. We love essence Get Big Lashes Volume Boost Mascara Waterproof for its staying power.

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #5: use sheer gloss on your lips
If your favourite lip balm isn’t glam enough for you, a clear or tinted gloss will give you luscious lips without too much intensity. Reach for something like COVERGIRL Natureluxe Gloss Balm, which gives a hint of shine, colour and moisture.

TEENAGE MAKE-UP TIP #6: give your cheeks a natural flush
A natural rosy flush is all you need when you’re hitting the classroom, so keep it simple with a peach or pink hue. Want to give your cheeks an extra boost? Opt for a cream blush like Australis Cosmetics Crème Colour Blush for a luminous, fresh finish.
