How to firm the skin on your face without surgery

We all want firm, glowing skin. But getting older means skin starts to change. We lose elasticity, volume and bounce to our skin’s texture – often referred to as ‘sagging’. Sure you may think it’s just a natural part of ageing, but if you employ a targeted skin care approach, along with making preventative lifestyle choices, you can actually ensure ageing doesn’t occur quicker than it needs too.

But first, we need to get a grip on why sagging happens to know how to treat it.

What happens to our skin as we age?

As we age fibroblast function in our skin slows down and this has a knock-on effect on collagen and elastin production. “Not only does the quantity of collagen deplete with age, the quality is also compromised and glycation of collagen fibres is a result of this,” explains Gemma Rogers, Estée Lauder Education Manager for New South Wales. “The visible result of all of these factors is sagging of the skin.”

Most women will notice this from their 40s onwards, but due to certain factors such as genetics, hormones, skin exposure to UV and free radicals, it can vary from person to person. Unfortunately, due to micro movements, over time certain zones of the face – like the jawline, cheeks and laugh lines – are more prone to sagging.

Which ingredients are best for treating saggy skin?

While a nip and tuck may be the answer for some people wanting firm skin, not everyone wants to take the risk of surgery or has the time or money. The good news is high-performance, science-inspired skin care products that are just as effective as invasive treatments are now available without having to go to the dermatologist’s office.

Enter one of the biggest non-invasive breakthroughs to date, Estée Lauder’s latest skin care product, Perfectionist Pro Rapid Firm + Lift Treatment Acetyl Hexapeptide-8. A mouthful to say perhaps, but an anti-ageing treatment product worth investing in, given its multi-functional formulation of AHAs to resurface, acetyl hexapeptide-8 to rebuild and hyaluronic acid to plump.

While there are plenty of anti-ageing skin care products on the market that look to reduce wrinkles, dryness and fine lines, very few specifically target sagging. This sets Estee Lauder Perfectionist Pro Rapid Firm + Lift Treatment apart from the crowd, making it the best, expert-approved, remedy for all anti-ageing concerns especially skin tightening.

Powerful yet ultra gentle, the blend of AHA re-texturisers infused in this product help accelerate the skin’s natural exfoliation process and gently resurface its texture. Then, in order to leave the skin feeling intensely hydrated and cushioned-looking, plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid are used, along with date seed and rice extract.

But that’s not where the technology stops. The hero element amongst these stellar ingredients, acetyl hexapeptide-8, has been specifically created to send signals to your skin to increase its own natural production of collagen-1, which is the most important type of collagen when it comes to anti-ageing. “It’s [Perfectionist Pro] made up of a custom designed precision peptide plus whey protein and algae extract to holistically firm and lift the look of skin,” explains Gemma. “The result is a more lifted and rejuvenated look.”

In its simplest explanation, the formula itself was designed to create more of this collagen-producing protein that allows skin to repair itself. Ultimately, this will assist in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles at a much faster, and more effective rate long term.

In combination, these superhero ingredients make a noticeable difference to sagging skin – and results from consumer testing can prove that. In three days, skin is more smooth, baby-soft and plumped. And in two weeks, skin feels firmer and facial contours, including jawline and cheeks, look more lifted and defined*.

What else can we do to help minimise skin sagging?

According to Gemma, you get the best results from doing lots of different things and that includes the lifestyle choices you make. “Lifestyle choices are your first defense against sagging and premature ageing!” she explains. “Avoid excessive sun exposure and smoking and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen and a hat when out in the sun.”

To create a truly effective treatment plan, Perfectionist Pro is an ideal addition to a comprehensive anti-ageing skin care routine. Apply it AM after cleansing, then follow it up with a moisturiser, and sunscreen during the day. In the PM, if you’re already using Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, apply it first, followed by Perfectionist Pro.

Gemma also recommends eating an antioxidant-rich diet and limiting your alcohol intake. On your next shop, drop these into your trolley: yellow and orange capsicum (contain carotenoids, which are a great antioxidant), tomatoes (contain lycopene that protect against sun exposure) and avocados (contain high levels of vitamin E to help soften and repair skin).

Stress can also wreak havoc on your skin, so Gemma says it’s a must to keep it in check. A build-up of stress can have a negative impact on your skin including rapid ageing, loss of skin radiance and elasticity. Look after yourself by trying out some gentle exercise and giving yourself some TLC.
