Gwyneth Paltrow’s guide to glossy, glowing skin

Considering the infamous vagina steaming escapade (and the ‘This Candle Smells Like My Vagina’ Goop wick that followed), we’ve learnt to take Gwyneth Paltrow’s beauty recommendations with a grain (or six) of salt.

But look, if you’re after non-toxic skin care that works a treat and feels luxurious, there’s no doubt that Paltrow has done enough testing and trialling to know what’s good and what’s not.

So, when she dropped her morning skin care routine in a recent Vogue video, we were all ears. Here are the products she rates, from serum to sunscreen…

Body brush

“The first part of my beauty routine which is really part of my wellness routine [because] I believe that beauty and wellness are inextricably linked, is the dry brush. You want a dry brush that has a little bit of resistance to it; that’s not too soft. And basically what you do is you start at your toes and you gently brush your skin all the way up the body. It really helps with circulation and exfoliation, among other benefits.”

Face exfoliant

“The next part of my morning routine is super important to me. It’s our GOOPGLOW Microderm Instant Glow Exfoliator. I’m a massive exfoliating junkie [and] it just gives you this incredible smooth finish.”

Face oil

“Now I am going to apply Vintner’s Daughter – this is an unbelievable serum. I love the way it smells, and you just put a couple of drops on. It’s incredible to know that there are clean, non-toxic products that are really efficacious and really work wonders on your skin.”

Eye masks

“Next, [and] I don’t do this every day; this is like special occasions. Say you’re doing a photoshoot or you have a really important Zoom, or maybe you had a bit of a rough night. Jillian Dempsey [is] a fantastic makeup artist and she has these hydrating eye pads. Sometimes I walk around the house with these on and my kids make fun of me. What else is new?”

Sculpting bar

“While I’m letting [my eye patches] soak in, and doing email or whatever, I get the Jillian Dempsey sculpting gold bar. You turn it on – it vibrates [and works to tone and tighten].”

Moisturiser

“People always ask me “if I wanted something that’s a clean, non-toxic product that really works, that I’d want to buy at the drugstore, what should I get?” And I always say Weleda Skin Food. They make this super rich, fantastic moisturiser [which is great because] I tend to have dry skin.”

Sunscreen

“[Last] is sunscreen. This is a clean mineral sunscreen brand called Unsun – it’s a 30 SPF.”

  1. “Say you’re doing a photo shoot…”. Gotta love Gwyneth for being so in touch with the everyday woman. Sometimes she nails it and other times she has no clue how unrelatable she is. I usually loathe celebrity products, but Gwyneth has been in the wellness and lifestyle game for awhile now and she really does have some wisdom to share. I’m currently sampling a couple of the GOOP skincare products – the exfoliator and moisturiser. The exfoliator is nice, but I’ll probably end up buying the Dr. Sturm enzyme powder because I like that just a bit better. But I like the GOOP moisturiser much better than the Dr, Sturm and the GOOP moisturiser is a lot cheaper so I’ll buy that one. I wouldn’t go taking all of Gwyneth’s advice (or anyone else’s, for that matter because we’re all different), but she occasionally comes through with the goods.

  2. The GOOP Exfoliator looks really interesting too. I’ve never tried any GOOP products, but this one is something I’d be interested in. But I’ll pass on the vagina candle thanks.

  3. This is the same woman who applies sunscreen like a highlighter on selective parts of her face and boasts that she does not apply it all over her body, particularly her neck (and it shows, Gwyneth – nice pigmentation and wrinkles!).

Also promotes Botox even though she claims she is completely "natural". Right…

I find it astounding that someone who has an influential reach in the millions can be so irresponsible and flippant about sunscreen, knowing that there is a likelihood there are people out there who take her words as gospel. Never take any advice from her.
