This is how to get more out of your moisturiser

No matter how simple or complex your skin care routine is, there is one step that should never be missed to help give your skin the hydration it needs: applying a moisturiser. While you might think simply slathering on your cream will suffice, your skin may not be reaping all of the benefits that it could be. Let us clear the waters on how to make sure you’re getting the most out of your moisturiser for healthier, younger-looking skin…

Get your hydration hit

To get the most out of your moisturiser, it’s important to understand why you need to use one in the first place. Applying moisturiser daily isn’t only essential for giving your complexion a boost of skin-softening and nourishing hydration; it also helps protect your skin. Lowri John, a dermal therapist at All Saints Skin Clinic Sydney, points out that “a moisturiser helps to create a protective barrier for our skin, to protect it from bacteria, pollution and the sun.”

Apply it right

So, how do you amp up the effectiveness of your moisturiser to ensure your skin’s getting the best protection possible? “Make sure you apply it both morning and night, and make sure you pick a formulation that’s best suited to your skin type,” explains Lowri. When it comes to exactly how much you should apply and the best application technique, Lowri advises that, “Generally, the rule of thumb is to apply no more than a five-cent-piece-sized amount. The best way to apply is with your fingertips using upwards motions. You want to work against gravity to help lift your skin.” And don’t neglect your neck! “Sometimes, your neck can be slightly more damaged than the skin on your face, and we do tend to forget about it and it can be a giveaway of your age.” So make sure your neck doesn’t miss out on the hydrating goodness of your moisturiser by applying it using upward motions, too.

Choose your formula wisely

Picking a moisturiser that contains the ingredients your skin needs every day can not only give your skin its hydration hit, but it also means you can streamline your skin care routine. Fewer products with more results? Yes, please! One moisturiser that can help to solve your skin’s hydrating needs is St. Derma Intense Revitalizer Cream.

It’s formulated with nourishing ingredients like sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, and macadamia oil, which are put through a cold-press process to help them retain their benefits, and also gives the cream a natural fragrance. Rich in vitamin E, these oils help the skin to retain water for long-lasting hydration and leave it feeling soft and smooth.

The cream also contains co-enzyme Q10, which can help prevent the onset of visible lines and wrinkles, and vitamin C which is renowned for helping to keep the skin looking brighter. Rounding out the formula is vitamin A, which helps to regulate cell turnover, further helping to prevent the breakdown of collagen.

And it’s important to note what this cream doesn’t contain: it’s free of sulphates, parabens, lanolin, mineral oil, alcohol, artificial colours and fragrances, SLS, nanoparticles and also animal testing, so you can rest easy knowing that you’re giving your skin its best chance at looking and feeling healthier and hydrated.

Store it properly

If there’s one thing that can stop your moisturiser working effectively for the long haul, it’s how you store it. “If you keep your moisturiser with the lid off or not closed properly, it will be exposed to air, which can cause it to oxidise and reduce the effectiveness of the cream’s ingredients. Storing it in direct sunlight can also make it more temperamental,” explains Lowri. “And putting your fingers into the pot can contaminate your moisturiser.” Instead, make sure you store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and use a spatula or cotton tip to remove product from the jar.
